16GB SO-DIMMS working in Thinkpad Yoga 14 Broadwell?

I've recently bought a ThinkPad Yoga 14 (with Broadwell CPU) and have been trying to get a 16GB RAM module working in it without success.

I bought the 16GB SO-DIMM module from I'M Intelligent Memory http://www.intelligentmemory.com/. The advise thier memory is compatible with all 5th Gen (Broadwell) Core i-series Intel processors.

I see Lenovo has recently started selling their own 16GB module Part No. 4X70J32868 http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/acc100204. Here only ThinkPad T450s and X250 are supported. Users on these forums have also reported the Intelligent Memory modules also work in these machines.

Is there a reason for only x250, t450s supporting 16GB RAM modules? Why would other Broadwell laptops like the ThinkPad Yoga 14 not be supported? Is there something special about the CPU or BIOS on these machines? Or is this a marketing decision to restrict 16GB support only to high-end laptops?

Have you maybe considered the memory module you received is faulty Smiley Wink ?

Re: 16GB SO-DIMMS working in Thinkpad Yoga 14 Broadwell?

Hi Jonas,

A faulty module was my first suspicion. I sent it back to the manufacturer and they ran hours of stress-tests on the module successfully without any issues. Unless they're outright lying to me (which I sincerely doubt) it's not the module that's the problem.

I'm curious why Lenovo only supports their own 16GB module in a t450s or x250 (the flagship T and X series thinkpads). Users of the Intelligent Memory modules have also reported success using that brand of 16GB modules in those same thinkpad models.

Is it a hardware issue (that can never be fixed obviously), a firmware issue that could be fixed with a BIOS update, or a marketing ploy by Lenovo to upsell to their more expensive laptops?

2015 ThinkPad Ypga 14. Anti-glare screen (although anti-glare touchscreens re still pretty glossy). No active pen included - doesn't seem to be an option yet. Having said that the touchscreen has been really accurate - easily enough to use Windows handwriting recognition.

Might be possible it's unsupported, which is very unfortunate. Let's just wait and see if someone else has this issue.

This might be obvious, but make sure you bought the non-ECC version. Yes, ECC and non-ECC SO-DIMMs actually have different pin-outs!
