Does my X1 Yoga have a mobile broadband ability via a SIM card?

2017-10-05, 8:17 AM

Hi,

I have a Thinkpad Ultrabook, an X1 Yoga i7 which is model 20FRS11T0W.

On the back edge there is a SIM card slot, but I would like to know if there is hardware for it?

In Device Manager, I did not see anything obvious for it.

When I clicked View Show Hidden devices in Device Manager, "Modems" appeared, but only has SAMSUNG Mobile USB Modem. I don't see anyhting about WWAN - is that would it would appear as?

Or does it only appear in Device Manager if a SIM card is inserted?

And what is the size of the SIM - is it nano? Could not find a manual online.

Thanks,

David

So I have put in a SIM card but do not see anything in device manager.

It's the medium size SIM, the one up from a Nano.

Weirdly, the "Modem" entry has now disappeared from the Device Manager tree even when Show Hidden Devices.

Is it possible there is a slot for a SIM but no hardware behind it?

Hello and welcome to the Community

There is a uncertainty in regard to laptop factory specification. Laptop' serial number is needed to clarify that. Do not share it in public here, you might send it me via forum private messages service.

If the wwan card has been inserted and drivers installed, wwan device (in your case Sierra em7455) should appear in the Network Adapters category of Device Manager. Adapter' default configuration doesn't have modem port.

Do it well, worse becomes itself

If the WWAN device doesn't show up under the device manager, you probably don't have one.  It is an option.  Did you order it specifically?

I was able to find the system build list and it should have a Sierra EM7455 WWAN card. It makes sense to check in BIOS under Security I/O Port Access to ensure that it is enabled.

Hi all,

Thank you for your help and feedback.

When I inserted the SIM the first time, it didn't seem to work. I swithced off and tried again.

When I inserted the SIM card the second time, it appeared in the Network Connections area, the "metro-style" connection panel that pops up from the tray icon (Windows 10). I was able to click Cellular there. to test i switched off wi-fi, and it worked fine via the sim card.

I didn't need to install extra drivers for it but I'd recently installed all the latest hardware drivers for other issues, mainly with video (which did improve things enormously).

Best regards

David
