Intel Rapid Storage Technology in Thinkpad twist

Hey guys,

I got my Thinkpad Twist which comes with "25 GB SSD" which, I think, acts as express cache to make programs run faster. Indeed, I tried the command "eccmd.exe -info", which actually indicates that the SSD acts as sorts of expresscard cache.

However, I think the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" should be the driver/software to improve the performance of the system. I did not find it in my Thinkpad Twist.

I did some internet research and found that the SATA control should be set into RAID mode in order to active the SSD caching technology, however in my BIOS setting there are only ACHI and compatibility modes, no RAID mode available.

My questions are: is this 25 GB SSD used to accelerate the software in my Thinkpad Twist? if so, do I need to install the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" driver, although it seems require RAID mode which is not available in BIOS?

Thanks.

Re: Intel Rapid Storage Technology in Thinkpad twist

Hey there gykdbk,

The ExpressCache software on the SSD is designed to improve overall system performance and greatly speed up Windows PC startup, application launches and data access. Further information regarding ExpressCache can be at this knowledgebase article. For this software to work, you do no need the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver installed. When running the command eccmd.exe -info I assume you are finding this software is running as per normal, and you are not recieving any error messages, such as ERROR** ECCmd Request device is not available. However, if you do encounter this software not working as per normal there are some instructions here to uninstall and reinstall this software. I hope this helps.

Re: Intel Rapid Storage Technology in Thinkpad twist

Thanks, Tout1108G. So what's the difference between this "Express Cache technology" and the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology"?

Re: Intel Rapid Storage Technology in Thinkpad twist

My understanding of these two technologies is that the Intel Rapid Storage Technology is best for systems RAID capable, with multiple hard drives. This isn't to say that you can't use it for a single drive on ACHI. Unfortunately I'm not very well versed in this technology, to draw distinct differences. Hopefully, some other community members can give some insight on to their uses of this technology.

The ExpressCache software that comes on the SSD is specific to Lenovo SSDs, and is to perform as mentioned. I apologize that I could not have been of more help in this comparison.
