There have been plenty of threads about poor wifi performance on Lenovo S540.
But this is a new story. It is not poor, it is unhealthily terrible.
I purchased S540 in summer 2014 and yes, wifi was weak but tolerable. Around 1 month ago, without a notice and without any intervention from my side, it became unhealthily weak. I mean it, 1 meter from router is more or less fine (three bars out of five), 2 meters - weak and unstable, 3 meters - it doesn't even see the network. No barriers between router and laptop, of course
The problem is not with router. That's because I tried two different routers, two different ISPs (and iphone hotspot just in case)- same story in every instance. Also, other devices in my family - laptops, smartphones and tablets - work just fine with existing wifi network.
The problem is not with specific wifi card. I replaced wifi card (Intel N 7260) with the new one (nb. and probably lost guarantee by that) but nothing changed at all.
The problem is not with software. I have all latest drivers and BIOS, and I also tested the problem under Windows 10 and under Ubuntu liveUSB - absolutely same symptoms, 3 meters from router = no wifi networks seen.
P.S. LAN internet works perfectly fine, problem is only with wifi.
From the above testings I conclude that problem is with hardware, but not wifi card - is it possibe?
I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas on how I should approach the diagnosis, what can be the cause and how to fix it. I have run out of the ideas.

I have exactly the same problem. All other devices work flawlessly on the same router. I replaced the wifi card and updated the drivers without any result. Using other routers (at the office) gives the same problem. The signal is very weak and unstable.
Like you said: plenty of threads about poor wifi performance on Lenovo S540. @Lenovo: please give us advice what we can do to fix the performance.

I didn't hear of anyone replacing the antenna.
I just ordered this device (USB Wifi Network Adapter) which at least gives me some (though slow) internet. I also ordered this wireless router (gives a bit faster internet when placed next to my laptop). Not a real solution, but probably faster than following the instructions of Lenovo.

Since 2 weeks, I'm experiencing the same issues with wireless connectivity. I think it's due to the wireless antenna embedded in the LCD lid. When the lid is closed, wireless reception is good. With the lid in normal position, the wireless reception is very weak.

I have exactly the same issue with my Wi-Fi. My Lenovo S540 is running under Windows 10 and the network Wi-Fi driver is from January 2016 (the last one).
It's very annoying to have an external wireless device. It doesn’t work for me because I’m working in different locations during the day, so the battery and volume is a problem too.
I will love to have a real way to fix this problem.

Im experiencing exactly the same problem. Its not the router, its not the OS, I have the newest drivers installed, LAN Internet works perfectly but WiFi - not even right in front of the routor. Although sometimes I manage to find the network, connection fails in 19 out of 20 cases.

The wifi problems probably have to do with the antenna. Due to the bad design of the antenna in the S540 it breaks after about 6 to 12 months. Because Lenovo was not willing to help me (unless I paid for their design flaws), I replaced the antenna myself. After a few hours of screwing, I got back the full wifi signal. The same happened to my friends laptop. I hope this post helps other people getting back their wifi signal.
Disclaimer: I expect the bad designed antenna to break again in about 6 to 12 months. So be prepared to follow this procedure a few more times...
