Lenovo Twist- Will not turn back on after restarting or battery dying

2020-02-05, 18:54 PM

Hello Lenovo community,

I am desperate for some advice and on the verge of giving up and buying a new laptop!! Please HELP!

I have the lovely little think pad twist and I've found over the past few months if the battery dies or the computer updates and restarts that my computer will not turn back on right away. This latest time the battery died and it won't turn back on at all and I've been trying for days!!

When I try and turn the computer back on, I hear the fan start up for 2-3 seconds and 2 rounds of 5 loud beeps. It then goes quiet and the screen remains black. The red thinkpad light is on, but the computer does not turn on. In the past, I would turn it on and off several times and eventually it would boot up and turn on. This time it still has not turned on. Please help, I'm not very computer literate, but willing to follow instructions. It doesn't seem like a battery issues because it used to do this if the computer restarted itself for updates and it wouldn't turn on after either. Any suggestions?

You don't cite the specific model, but I believe that on the bottom of those Twist models there is an emergency reset hole that you can press to reset your computer if it is stuck.

The instructions below are from page 87 the User Guide ThinkPad S230u (Twist)

Computer stops responding (Print these instructions now and keep it with your computer for reference later.)

If your computer is completely unresponsive (you cannot use the UltraNav pointing device or the keyboard), do the following:

1. Press and hold the power button to turn off the computer. • If the computer is turned off, restart the computer by pressing the power button. If you can not restart the computer, go to step 2.

2. While the computer is turned off, remove all power sources from the computer [I presume they are referring to the AC Adapter here since the battery is internal] and reset the system by inserting a straightened paper clip into the emergency reset hole [press and hold for a few seconds]. Then hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Reattach the ac power adapter. If the computer does not turn back on, continue to step

Note: If the computer starts with ac power but does not start when ac power is removed, call the Customer Support Center for support.

3. While the computer is off, remove all external devices that are attached to your computer (keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, and so on). Repeat step 2. If step 2 is unsuccessful, continue with step 4.

Note: The following steps involve removing static sensitive components from your computer. Ensure that you are properly grounded and remove all sources of power attached to the computer. If you are uncomfortable or unsure about removing components please call the Customer Support Center for assistance.

4. While the computer is off, remove all sources of power and external hardware and reset the system by inserting a straightened paper clip into the emergency reset hole. Then remove any non-original memory module added to your computer. If the computer still does not turn on, refer to Chapter 6 “Replacing devices” on page 49 for details of resetting other customer-replaceable components that are attached to your computer.

If the computer still does not start up, call the Customer Support Center and a Customer Support Specialist will assist you.

Best of luck,

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried all of these steps and still the computer fans spin like it's starting for 2 seconds, there are 5 loud beeps, 2 soft clicks, 5 loud beeps and 2 soft clicks and the think pad light is on, but the computer did not turn on. Any other suggestions??

UPDATE****

I've tried turning my computer on and off multiple times a day and also letting it sit and charge over two days. It usually turns back on randomly when I do this, but still no luck. On pressing on the start button, the fan spins for 2-3 secs, but it no longer beeps. Has anyone else every had this problem and were able to get their laptop repaired or did you give in a buy a new one?

Hello,

Given the age of the system (eight years now?), I am wondering if the internal battery has failed.  From what I recollect of the ThinkPad S230u Twist, working inside it was a bit difficult compared to other ThinkPad systems of that era due to the internal wiring inside.  So, if you do choose to replace the battery, follow the Hardware Maintenance Manual instructions very carefully and, above all, take your time and don't rush things.
