Re: Thinkpad S3 Yoga 14 - Random shut offs when not plugged in

Good evening.  I have been researching this because I am now having Windows 8.1 issues.  Most likely due to the inordinate number of battery based shutdowns.

As far as the shutdowns on battery go, I have had the machine for almost exactly a month and pretty much when I unplug it the laptop shuts down.  I have tracked it to a spot on the bottom where the black label with all of the certifications is.  If I power it up and tap there, even very lightly, the laptop shuts down immediately.  If I leave it sitting on a table while using it on battery power it seems fine but the moment I move it or pick it up it shuts down.

Any tips would be wonderful.  I am going to remove all of my software and data then open a case with support to have it fixed but if the contents of this thread are any indication it does not look like it will help.

Thanks!

Re: Thinkpad S3 Yoga 14 - Random shut offs when not plugged in

I put a few layers of tape over the switch and now I have no issues. If it gets worse I'll try soldering but I'd rather avoid warranty voiding behaviour for now if I can.

But Lenovo,

If you're going to be adding safety measures to your devices, please make sure you at least test them thoroughly first.

Amy_lenovo,

I am curious as to what the fix is?

I'm on my second S3 Yoga 14, the first was exchanged under warranty for this problem and my new one is experiances the same issue.  I don't want to have another notebook shipped out to me to only have it become unusable in a month and have to exchange it over and over again.

Re: Thinkpad S3 Yoga 14 - Random shut offs when not plugged in

I see the battery error every so often.

Haven't noticed the powerdown issue. while I am working.

I have noticed a few times where the machine will timeout to sleep and then I have to press the power button to resume.

(rather than press a key)

Josh I have this exact problem. TP yoga 14

Re: Thinkpad S3 Yoga 14 - Random shut offs when not plugged in

I had it happen after buying my first one before a new job. Got it all set
up and just randomly it would shut off. Often it would happen with touching
it. I got it at Best Buy. I returned it as it had only been 2 days.

I got another one because it was exactly what I needed. Two days later it
happened again with the new one. I checked the lot# and it was from the
same group as the other one. I just set everything up again and work was to
start. One time the battery error came on and then I thought it was in
sleep mode but I'd have to press the start button to wake it up.

When is Lenovo going to wake up and recall this group? My manufacture date
was February 2015 so it's not getting resolved if it's still been
happening. Surely enough of us have said something.

Called tech support as suggested by Amy_Lenovo and am being forced to run a bunch of diagnostic, and conveniently the tech guy can't possibly be expected to wait on the line while these tests run. here goes an hour of my life. If they know about the issue they certainly don't let on about it. Seriously wish I'd not bought this piece of junk.

Just cover the switch with a few (read five or more) layers of electrical tape and then put the back cover back on. If it still misbehaves when you

A) push parts of the back cover, specifically where the regulatory imprint is

B) shake it like Bond's martini or give it a fairly hard knock

then keep adding tape. It works wonders for me.

Re: Thinkpad S3 Yoga 14 - Random shut offs when not plugged in

I commend you guys for your MacGyver skills, and they did not go unnoticed the first read through, part of me refuses to do this to a brand new $1000 Laptop only with over 300 days of warranty left. I will bee double checking to see if i can return it when i get home, but I'm pretty sure I'm just outside that window.
