Replacing HDD with SSD and cloning operating system and recovery for S230u

2014-03-26, 13:33 PM

Hi,

I want to upgrade my S230u with the 500GB HDD to a 7mm 2,5" 480GB SSD (Corsair Force GS 480GB SATA3).

I am wondering how can I later on clone my OS from the HDD to SSD? Is it possible to plug the SSD in over USB, use some tool to clone the entire disk (including the recovery partition) and then simply switch to SSD?

Also, once I do that, how do I disable express cache and ideally disable using the built-in 24GB SSD? I am not interested in IRST as I tend to use hibernation a lot.

Re: Replacing HDD with SSD and cloning operating system and recovery for S230u

Hi,

There are a lot of possibilities, how to do it. Mainly it depend on used OS.

Windows 7 and newer have self imaging utility, so You need only bootable USB device (>16GB) with boot for Your OS (should be prepared inside of standard distribution Windows with "Lenovo Recovery" partition via Control panel's Recovery using "Create recovery drive" with option "Copy recovery partition" set on.

Make test boot and for other USB drive make the image of all Your partition using Microsoft "dism" imaging utility from that boot USB system to second USB drive with NTFS partition. This NTFS iś crucial, because Recovery Boot USB is FAT32 formatted and you may not store the dism prepared image on this, because of FAT32 file size limitation.

[ dism /capture-image /imagefile:h:\systemdrive.wim /capturedir:c:\ /name:system_disk_c /compress:max /bootable ] with replacing names and paths for other partitions You imaged.

Exchange disks within system and booting from Your recovery USB device may allows You to prepare the system booting into Original Firm Clean settings.

If You pass to proper boot from new disk, You may use next boot from that Recovery USB boot device and use Microsoft's "dism" utility again to restore Your drive images into new SDD drive prepared before.

[ dism /apply-image /imagefile:h:\systemdrive.wim /applydir:c:\ /index:1 ]

On my system the Original system was not booting properly (there was the UEFI boot used), so I found, that Lenovo recovery does not include make proper boot sector, so I have had use the Microsoft's "bcdboot" utility to solve this.

[ bcdboot c:\windows /s s: /f UEFI ]

Good luck.

Re: Replacing HDD with SSD and cloning operating system and recovery for S230u

Hello,

Windows 8.n performs some additional tuning of the operating system (basically, tweaking some of the services) when it detects that it is being installed to a SSD instead of a HDD, so it might be a good idea to perform a clean install of the operating system using the recovery media, install your programs and copy the data over to the new SSD.  I have seen that some SSDs from Intel and Samsung come with utilities to perform these tweaks after you have cloned a HDD onto one of their SSDs, but I do not know if Corsair provides a similar utility.

This is what I did when I removed the HDD and ExpressCache mSATA SSD, and replaced them with a larger mSATA SSD I had lying around from another project.

If you do decide to go this route, I would suggest removing the 24GB mSATA SSD used for ExpressCache before loading this operating system in order to avoid problems with the bootloader being written to the wrong SSD.  After finish configuring the PC, you can reinstall it and should be able to repartition it using the Disk Management (filename: DISKMGMT.MSC) program.

Re: Replacing HDD with SSD and cloning operating system and recovery for S230u

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I may be able to do just that. I still didn't buy the SSD, but I will follow up once I get it and do the copying.

Your solution with dism seems pretty good. I have a 250GB USB HDD that I can use for the recovery drive and I have a 2,5" USB SATA bay that I can use to put the new SSD drive to. I suppose that should work just fine.

I am also considering the other option of just doing a fresh install, but I don't think I want to go through the configuration of all desktop applications again.

Ok, I finally bought the SSD (decided to go with Samsung 840EVO), but when I boot from the recovery drive, I do not see any option to actually install Windows from it.

Do you know if I can do that from the recovery drive?

Hello,

When I installed the mSATA SSD in my S230u, I used Lenovo's factory recovery media (a set of four DVDs) and an external USB DVD-RW disc drive to install/reinstall Windows 8 to the SSD.

This was last summer, and I don't recall the exact steps I took, but you might want to look in the BIOS to make sure your S230u is set to boot from the recovery drive first.  At the first point you are prompted to reboot, go back into the BIOS, change it to boot from the SSD first, and then exit and continue with the recovery operation.

Re: Replacing HDD with SSD and cloning operating system and recovery for S230u

This is what I did when I removed the HDD and ExpressCache mSATA SSD, and replaced them with a larger mSATA SSD I had lying around from another project.

So once you replaced your drives with the mSATA SSD did you have any issues with a out of memory error?

I have removed the 24GB mSATA and the HDD replaceing them with a single Samsun 40 Evo mSATA (in the slit that the old 24GB one cam out of).  After a full reset and reinstall of the apps etc the machine works well.  Way beter than from factory.  Only issue now is that a message keeps popping up stating that it is nearly out of memory and to close some applications.  this occurs even if only one app is running (with a fair few small ones in the background of course).

It appears that this error message occurs when I hit 75% RAM.

Any idea how to remove or change the threshold?

The other thought I had was that the system may be trying to write to the old (removed) 24GB mSATA and given it has been replaced with the primary drive the system is unable to write and therefore can't off-load unused items from memory to drive.  Again any thoughts on how to resolve this one?

Thanks

Re: Replacing HDD with SSD and cloning operating system and recovery for S230u

Hello,

I did have that error occur once, when I was trying to run Windows 7 Enterprise (x64) through VMware Workstation 10 (my S230u has 4GB of RAM and was running Windows 8.0 at the time).  The solution for me was to reduce the amount of RAM used by the VM to 2GB.

Unfortunately, I don't have my S230u with me right now, so I cannot check this myself directly, but have you tried changing the size of the paging file used for virtual memory?  In the System Properties (filename: SYSDM.CPL) Control Panel applet, go to the Advanced tab, at the top of the Performance section, click on the Settings button and the Performance Options dialog will apear.

Click on the Advanced tab in the Performance Options dialog, and then the Change button towards the bottom.  This will open the Virtual Memory dialog.

Try chaning the paging file size from System Managed Size to a Custom Size, where both the Initial Size and the Maximum Size are the same thing.  What this should do is create a virtual memory paging file stat is static in size on the mSATA SSD.  You might want to try values of 8192MB / 8192MB and see if that helps at all.  A reboot may be required once you've made the change for it to take effect.

If that doesn't work, you should change the value back to System Managed Size, as there's no reason to use leave it enabled.

The page file size was set to no page file I.e. 0.  This was done to hopefully increase the life of the SSD by having less writes.  I have now set it as you have sugestted and we will see what happens.

Thanks
