Re: SURPRISE, No fan in my Yoga Pro 2. Am I mistaken? It runs hot and utterly silent. Help.

I'm a newcomer on this nifty site. Own this Yoga 2 for a couple years, and never heard fan noise. I thought the hot case was a design flaw until I read of problems with fan noise, disconnecting fan etc. Does it have a fan? If so , how do I get it running?  Would appreciate some knowledge.

I'm not an owner of your model, but according to the Yoga 2 Pro's Hardware Maintenance Manual your laptop has two cooling fans.  I would suggest that you remove the back cover and further inspect the fans. The accumulated dust should give you an indication if the fans are working or not.  I would also use the opportunity to use some canned compressed air on the fans and heat sink to remove the accumulated dust which can lead to poor cooling.  Remember to use short bursts of air to clean as prolong blasts of air may damage the fans.  If the fans are clean with no sign of being used then I would reseat the connectors for the fans as shown on page #41 in the manual.  Here is a link to the manual for your reference...

Thanks Majestic,  Your clear communication impresed me.

I think one of my problems is the proper identification of my Yoga Pro2. Here's whats happening:

Because it seemed to run too hot, I figured bad fans, and took it to The Best Buy's pros and the guy said the real thin ones --like mine --had no fans. But so many owners talk about the fans. Confusing.

Here's the numbers:

MADE 1/26/14

MODEL80AY

SERIAL N=xxxxx

YOGA 213

Honest, I tried searching for info on fans with no luck.  So I remain puzzled.  Do I have some odd model? Should I write to Lenovo, or can u solve this mystery with certainty.

By the way, this is a great site

Sorry to say everything I've searched on points to the manual I posted previously.  I do recall a previous discussion some time ago with another owner and there was some confusion over his model's naming scheme...... Yoga 2 Pro  versus Yoga Pro 2. The owner insisted each model had slightly different hardware although I was never to find any differences documented.  The documentation I did find comes back to the Yoga 2 Pro as I noted before.  In viewing your warranty information it lists your model as a Yoga 2 13.  In checking the Hardware Maintenance Manual for that model it also shows a fan and heat sink assembly on page #41.  Here is a link to that manual for your reference....

From my personal experience I have Yoga 3 Pro and and Yoga 900 and each of those does indeed have a cooling fan(s) and both are slim line models like the Yoga 2 Pro.

Since you are experiencing a heat issue the quickest way to resolve the fan mystery is have the Geek Squad over a Best Buy refresh your thermal paste.  Once the cover is removed the issue of the fans will be resolved and given the age of the laptop it would benefit from an application of fresh paste.   Thermal pastes over time can lose their effectiveness and the thermal pastes of today do a better job with heat transfer.  A new application of paste will help will your heat issue, fans or not.  It would also be a good time for the Geek Squad to blow out any accumulated dust in the heat sink assembly for better cooling as well.

Now I'm a believer about real fans in my Yoga. I'll either do it myself, or tell the Geek kids, that they insisted on no fans while my membership was  current (it was on a grant last year)---and ask if they could refresh paste and test fan.

If not, I'll try buying new fan and learn what sized screw driver to buy.   It actually sounds like fun and a relief from academic work.

This has been unexpected support.

I couldnt afford another computer this year, and I'm addicted to this one.. Thanks a lot.

You are very welcome.

Best of luck in resolving the fan and heat issue.
