Thinkpad S540 very hot, not charging

Hey there,

I have the Thinkpad S540 with the i7-4510U and the Radeon HD 8670M. The Laptop is running very hot (in idle 70°C and on load about 100°C). I've replaced the thermal compound with arctic mx 4 but still the same temps. Also, the Laptop doesn't charge. If i calibrate the Battery it charges for about 2-5% and then it stops again. Charging works fine in macOS but Windows has these problems.

I'm glad there's a bright side to using macOS!

Did you properly place the thermal paste? Check the temperatures of individual cores, are they all near the same or are some cool and some not?

You should also undervolt. This is critical and will significantly lower temperatures.

As for the battery, it might be defective. Did you look at the battery report?

Well, is there a way to undervolt the CPU? Afaik the CPU is locked.

Also, yea... the thermal paste is applied correctly (the thermal paste was not really dry before and nothing changed so i think it was still good)

Yes, this isn't overclocking. You can use Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility or ThrottleStop. There are many videos out there on how to do it. Basically, lower the voltage a bit, check to see if the CPU is stable, repeat. When unstable, undo the undervolt by an increment or two and you're done.

Okay then, thanks for the help! The Battery charges fine on macOS and while it's turned off by the way. It's actually a Windows thing...

Re: Thinkpad S540 very hot, not charging

No problem. Also, you have macOS on your Thinkpad? You should make sure you don't have something like "conservation mode" through Lenovo Vantage, it may be causing the issue.

Hope things work out, ask if you need anything. Good luck!

And we're back...
