Thinkpad Yoga 14 laptop just shuts off instantly

I have a new Lenovo Ultrabook Thinkpad Yoga 14 for the last two months. Since last 2 weeks, this laptop just shuts off instantly even it is moved just a bit. However this happens only when it is not connected to power outlet. Please help.

Re: Thinkpad Yoga 14 laptop just shuts off instantly

Hi Sanjay Phirke,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I think there might be some loose contact between internal battery and the system board.

Try with resetting the system from Emergency reset hole, which will be at the bottom of the laptop.

Emergency-reset hole

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Re: Thinkpad Yoga 14 laptop just shuts off instantly

Hello Sanjay,

I was having this issue too, and I was able to figure out how to fix it, and published my fix here:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/S-Series-ThinkPads-ThinkPad-Yoga/Re-Thinkpad-S3-Yoga-14-Random-shut-offs...

and on the next page here:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/S-Series-ThinkPads-ThinkPad-Yoga/Re-Thinkpad-S3-Yoga-14-Random-shut-offs...

I hope this helps out, however I'm not certain what this would do in regards of warranties held with lenovo.

Re: Thinkpad Yoga 14 laptop just shuts off instantly

THANKS Register Fault.  Beasue of your posts, I was able to fix my Yoga 14.  It was the flexing of the case when the switch woul dtrip and go out. I did the solder blobs and everything is working great. I couldnt spent the time sending in the machine to get repaired so I am glad I found your posts to solve it!!

Thanks again

Re: Thinkpad Yoga 14 laptop just shuts off instantly

I am having this problem now. After 4 months of ownership. I am not technically capable of this fix. What should I do? Here is a list of all my grievances with this laptop:

  1. When I pick it up from the right corner, it shuts off.
  2. When I put it to sleep by closing the lid, it shuts off.
  3. I get a “battery not detected” message.
  4. It is very slow at startup. Sometimes it takes a few minutes before the trackpad will work correctly.
  5. I get a buzzing noise in my headphones when the computer is unmuted and charging. Buzzing goes away when I unplug the charger, or if I mute it.
  6. It is very creaky and the keyboard bends when I rest my hands on it to type.\\\

 Thanks for any help

Re: Thinkpad Yoga 14 laptop just shuts off instantly

Hi Nimonj,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I pick it up from the right corner, it shuts off. – Check disabling Active protection from control panel.

When I put it to sleep by closing the lid, it shuts off. – Check installing Lenovo power manager

I get a “battery not detected” message. – Check installing Lenovo power management

It is very slow at startup. Sometimes it takes a few minutes before the track-pad will work correctly. – Disable the startup program from system configuration. Windows+R type msconfig and click on OK and go to startup tab to remove unwanted startups.

I get a buzzing noise in my headphones when the computer is un-muted and charging. Buzzing goes away when I unplug the charger, or if I mute it. – Check updating audio drivers to latest.

It is very creaky and the keyboard bends when I rest my hands on it to type. - For this you have to check with re-seating the keyboard, this can be done with our service center.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps!!!

Do post us back if the issue still persists.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Re: Thinkpad Yoga 14 laptop just shuts off instantly

nimonj a robot could have provided better answers than these.  Why are these guys here?  About half of the answers might be ok though.  It sounds like you have the case switch problem as already answered.  No software configuration is going to fix that. It sounds unlikely that any software solution will provide active cancellation to electrical pickup noise in your audio system.  Mostly you are describing hardware problems that require hardware fixes.  The lid-power issue might actually be a configuration problem and the slow boot answer is not wrong either.

Notice that he described one solution for a hard drive problem (active protection) without even asking if you have a hard drive (as oposed to SSD). Even if you do have one, active protection absolutely should not shut off the whole machine and this symptom exactly fits with the battery error and both match with the switch problem.

Re: Thinkpad Yoga 14 laptop just shuts off instantly

Thank you! I tried all of those solutions and we will see how they work. I am beginning to regret choosing a thinkpad yoga, but hopefully these problems will go away.

One other issue is that my harddrive makes a highpitched buzzing sound from underneath the right back corner of the keyboard. I know that this is an issue with older computers, although it is not as bad as that, and I wonder if it fits with all the other symptoms of an improperly built laptop? Not all hard disks make this noise, but I have heard this sound from enough of them that maybe it is just an expected thing that I will need to get over.

Another issue: my usb port on the left-hand side does not work at all. I belive this is supposed to be the "charging port", but it does nothing whether I turn it on or off in the Lenovo settings application.

Thanks for any help!

Audio driver not the problem:

Tried updating audio driver, and it is already the most up to date version, but the static noise through my headphones still persists when laptop charger is plugged in.

FYI, if your high-pitched buzz is accompanied by your screen changing from Metro(tile) to Desktop mode all by itself, it may be a different issue (Thinkpad Yoga 14 - Random Buzz and Switch Between Desktop/Metro mode)

I thought it was the spinning HDD but I saw this happen with an SSD, then found the above post.
