Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

2014-01-26, 16:14 PM

Admin Note: This thread has been reorganized for escalation purpose -  using ajpot's info for escalation since he was the first to respond to my request of collecting information.

I've got the ghosting issue on my yoga as well.  It was OK for the first few weeks (no noticeable ghosting at all) but now it only takes around a minute of having something on screen for ghosting to appear when switching to something else.

I'm in the process of sending my yoga in for repair as I'm experiencing some other issues, so I've asked them to repair the screen as well.  From what I've read, it's likely they won't be able to fix it (in which case I'll be asking for a refund) but I'll see how it goes.

Machine: ThinKPad Yoga

Machine Type Model: 20CD-CT01WW

Date manufactured: 3rd December 2013

Re: Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

2014-11-05, 2:04 AM

Some members of the Lenovo forums reported image retention issues on their ThinkPad Yogas.

Please see earlier Lenovo advisories in this thread

Summary:  As a result of an investigation, Lenovo released a service tip to replace original SPB1 IPS panels exhibiting these symptoms with the SPB2 panel. Lenovo then investigated additional reports of SPB2 panels displaying image lag. At this time, Lenovo has concluded that the IPS SPB2 panels are working as designed.

If your ThinkPad Yoga SPB1 panel is exhibiting persistent ghosting, please contact Lenovo Service for support and reference Service TIP #SF14-T0064/ HT082470.

Thank you to everyone who contributed feedback.

Thinkpad Yoga watermark screen issue

2014-01-22, 0:55 AM

I've got a Thinkpad Yoga 20CD-0033US at Fry's Electronics. At almost 3 weeks of my purchase, I noticed using a desktop app that after 5 minutes, the screen starts "memorizing" the images that are static, like the explorer bar and the Start logo. This gets worst if the image has white and is big, because more time the image remains, more bold gets on the screen. I'm not sure if it's a driver problem or is about the build quality of the screen.

I have to add than I'm very disappointed with the build quality of this computer. The one that I'm using is the SECOND ONE!, because the first stopped working at the third day, and this second one has design flaws, like a defective "B" letter and visible spaces between the screen and its housing. Very unacceptable for a $1300 laptop.

If somebody has any software solution for my screen problem I would appreciate it, because I live outside the US and the technical service here in Colombia doesn't answer

(sorry for my English).

This is the ghosting issue. It is a common problem in LG Philips IPS LCD. You could try to get another replacement, but it may get much better.

Hi lead_org.

I'm experiencing some ghosting too. I see the windows logo and taskbar from the Desktop in the Start screen and I also noticed Google Chrome tabs at the top edge of the screen when at the Start screen. They eventually disappear after a while.

Is it likely to get worse over time or is this as bad as it gets? So far it only seems to affect the edges of the screen, I don't see any ghosting elsewhere so far (touch wood).

It doesn't get better or worse over time. At least that is my experience with the the X220 IPS LCD.

Many thanks lead_org. I can live with the ghosting if this is as bad as it gets. I understand this issue also affected Retina MacBook displays (the ones with LG displays).

Thanks for the answer! Fortunately it disappears when using apps that change images frequently, buy if you work often with desktop apps, in 30 minutes you will see very clear ghost images.

Hi,

There is no forum specific for Thinkpad Yoga but I write here because Convertible Laptops with Digitizer are welcomed to post here as well.

Any news from Lenovo Decision on fixes in new batches of 12.5' LCD Pannels of thinkpad yoga? The Ghosting Issue is terrible and many users according to Thinkpad Yoga Forum in Notebook Review are suffering from the issue (http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/731068-lenovo-thinkpad-yoga.html).

I also appreciate it if Lenovo dedicate a thread specific to Thinkpad Yoga.

Thanks

Re: Thinkpad Yoga watermark screen issue

As amirvf mentioned this is a common issue and there is an active discussion about it over at http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/731068-lenovo-thinkpad-yoga.html

Here is a quick recap:

  • TPY uses a 12.5" LG Philips panel that has really, REALLY bad case of image retention (ghosting)
  • The ghosting is not permanent and is actually specific to the way LCD panels work and present on all panels, but usually it's so minor that it is not noticeable to the naked eye. In case of those LG Philips panels, however, the effect is VERY noticeable.
  • Lenovo has a page explaining the general issue: http://support.lenovo.com/de_DE/detail.page?DocID=HT051485
  • The easiest way to check for this is via http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html (this is a test that was made for MBPro that had ghosting issues, but it works great for testing TPY too)
  • The same panel is used in Dell XPS 12 and there is a long thread on Dell forums complaining about the issue: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19497269.aspx
  • The problem is inherent to the process/chemistry used in the panels and cannot be solved via software/driver update. (Although some support representatives will direct you to partial solutions that flash different colors and can alleviate the issue but only marginally). To fix this issue panel manufacturer (LG Philips) would have to modify it's tech process and a replacement panel would have to be installed.
  • The bad news are that currently there is no solution (AFAIK). They can swap your panels to your heart's delight, but currently there are not panels available that do not exhibit the issue (You should note, however, that the issue is usually less pronounced on a new panel and is gradually amplified over a course of first several weeks, so if you have on-site support and if you/Lenovo are willing, you could theoretically swap your panels every two weeks or so to approximate a real solution). Also note that the market for 12.5" panels is relatively small and there is no real competition, so there is no strong incentive for LG Philips to fix anything (XPS 12 has been suffering from this for over a year now, even through a model refresh)
  • The good news are that Dell has finally acknowledged the issue and are saying that LG Philips has fixed the panels and new batch is coming around February, plus some people have reported that their newly bought XPS 12 does not exhibit ghosting. So, assuming this is indeed so, new panels should trickle down to TPY owners too sometimes.

I'd love to see an official acknowledgement/response from Mark on this...
