I have a s230 u that I dropped so HDD has crashed and going to replace it with another hdd (presuming cost is much less than a SSD) and don't know which make, model would work (assuming ebay is easiest to buy a replacement).
How do i know what makes and models would fit/work ie just plug it into the slot.
The current HDD is a Hitachi HGST HTS725050A7E630 2.5 SATA thin 500GB 7200RPM which i think is 7mm. So I could buy the exact same make and model or buy a newer one from Hitachi/other vendors.
So trying to figure out which ones will work and also where to buy cheapest one (other than ebay) (and what I need to check before buying, assume 2.5 inch and SATA and any HDD should work?)

To be 100% sure which HDD will fit you can buy the Lenovo one with the specific part number.
It is on the support site for the "Thinkpad s230u" You can select "Documentation" at the top and "System Service Parts" on the left menu, go to the article "System Service Parts - ThinkPad Twist, S230u" and you will see the PDF download icon under "Download now"
But you can get an idea on how to install the HDD and the size of it by checking the "Hardware Maintenance Manual".
Also you can always try to find the part number on ebay or google and see how it looks like. You may buy a similar one, and it may work, but that is not supported by Lenovo, it is under your own reponsability.
I hope this gives you some hints.

Any 2.5" hard disk drive or solid-state drive in a 7mm high form-factor should work.
I have had good results buying both from NewEgg and Amazon in the past, but I always make sure I am buying directly from them and not from a reseller using their online store services.
