s230u Hard Drive Issue

Hey guys, I'm really bummed out.

I have an s230u. I love it. Literally nothing wrong with it except for this issue.

Something is going on with the hard drive. Sometimes when I boot it, it says "HD Detection issue" or something like that.

I've messed around with it A LOT and I know that I CAN make it boot up constantly by holding it a certain way .. its really really weird. But basically if I hold it with one hand from the right hand corner (where the HD is) it boots up fine and usually continues to work for sometime. It's almost like it needs me to do that to complete a circuit or something.

I've tried shimming it and stuff but that didn't work. I'm really clueless as to how to fix it, but I beleive it has to do with some kind of internal connectivity issue.

I'd love to fix it and any help would be MUCH appreciated. I have no reason to buy a new laptop and I also a little disgusted that my 5 year old Laptop is NOT much different than whats out there right now.

Re: s230u Hard Drive Issue

Hello,

It sounds like the drive cable may only be making intermittent contact.  Have you tried carefully opening the ThinkPad S230u, disconnecting the internal drive and then very carefully plugging it back in?

Re: s230u Hard Drive Issue

I have removed my hard drive before and that didn't work, just from the slot on the side.

Is that what you are talking about or are you talking about another cable that requires opening the computer up?

If so I have not done that as I don't really know how to open the computer up or what cable that would be. But I could try if that's what you're talking about.

Re: s230u Hard Drive Issue

Yes it's about opening the case, like here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_pXuTcNyuA

Probably it is just the one of the cable's plugs connecting the internal HD that's not fully in the soket. It seems a mechanical/connecting issue, pretty sure.

Maybe you know some talented tinkerer to help you open it? It's not difficult, but experience helps a lot in understanding how it's made easiest.

If that does not help, the cable itself may be defective.

If a new cable does not help, it may be the soket at the HD (this chance is low, would need a new HD).

Or, most bad, the soket on the mainboard is bad (this chance is low, would need a mainboard change).

Re: s230u Hard Drive Issue

I'll try it, that video looks like it can help. I tried dissasembly blind once and i found it difficult.

Where is the HD cable located?

Re: s230u Hard Drive Issue

Hello,

Lenovo has ThinkPad S230u Twist Service Videos which explain how to replace the internal drive, as well as Hardware Maintenance Manual to refer to as well for disassembly instructions.

Re: s230u Hard Drive Issue

I took it apart. Didn't know what to do really so I just tightened down the one screw that attached the hard drive to the motherboard.

Seems to be working well so far hopefully that fixed it. (knock on wood)

Re: s230u Hard Drive Issue

Ah, no cable. HD sits in the mainboard socket directly. Then that screw could have made it.

If not, loosen the HD fixing screws a bit, move the HD very, very, very (!!) carefully in all directions (to make the contact move a little tiny bit), try to see in wich angle the board socket is plugged in (front-back or top-down) and make sure it sits (e.g. no gaps between plastics). Fix the screws again.
