2 Hard drives in a T510?

2012-07-12, 2:11 AM

Hi I was wondering if anyone knows how or even if it's possible.  I'd like to have two hard drives one solid state for my OS and programs I used daily and one for storage purposes.  I don't think my T510 has to drive bays so I was thinking maybe I could get rid of the CD drive and make it into a drive bay with another drive?

Is it possible and how would I go about the process...

Thanks any help is appreciated! :smileywink:

T510 can support one HDD in the internal HDD bay, and another one in the ultrabay using this adapter (instead of the CD/DVD drive):  http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_Serial_ATA_Hard_Drive_Bay_Adapter_III

There are also aftermarket adapters that will work.

T510 does not support mSATA SSD like T520 and T530 do.

I have two HDDs (Momentus XT) in my T510 - a 320GB and a 500GB.  The OS drive is the 320, and it is mounted in the internal drive bay.  The 300GB is mounted in the Ultrabay adapter - the newer 12.5mm size that leaves no gap.

I carry the optical drive in a padded bag in case it is needed - hasn't been used in over a year!

Works great.  Either drive can be an SSD - just a matter of affordability.  The two hybrids do me just fine.

"T510 does not support mSATA SSD like T520 and T530 do."

^^^^What exactly do you mean by that?   T510 does support SSD just not mSATA?  What does it support if not mSATA?

Thanks again.

That's correct.  there is no mini SATA connector in the T510 - it hadn't been fielded yet.  The T510 takes standard SSDs with standard SATA connectors.

This is incorrect - I'm holding a T510 with an internal MSATA connector right now.  Type 4349-BP9

It's in exactly the same place as the connector in my T520

I haven't worked on a T510 in a while, but here's what I remember.  Both T520 and T510 machines that have a connector for an optional WWAN card.  On the T520, you can replace the WWAN card by an mSATA SSD.  On the T510, it just won't work.

If you really want storage in that slot on the T510, what you can do is get a miniPCIe to 2 microSD adapter and put in some microSD cards. AFAIK these adapters will run at just USB 2.0 speeds unless someone's made a newer variant by now.
