40-pin eDP 4-lane display cables: are they compatible across T/X/P models?

2021-07-17, 20:17 PM

Hey everyone,

I've got a question regarding screen upgrade in T15 / T15 Gen2 that come with FHD screen (and respective 2-lane FHD 30-pin).

If i get it right, to get better screen resolution I would need to purchase:

1) 40-pin eDP cable that would support 4 lanes.

2) 2K (WQHD) or 4K (UHD) screen, and it has to be "slim".

first of all, could anyone confirm that this upgrade is possible on a FHD system? (I remember that older models did not have necessary 4 lanes on the motherboard)

I've been looking around to get a proper cable, and on aliexpress there's a variety:

- there are "WQHD" cables that presisely state they are for 2K resolution - is there a certain limitation? and "UHD" cables that are fine for 4K.

- there are cables that look similar, but some are for diffirent models (like P51, or X1 carbon). Does it matter? shouldn't they be all the same across thinkpads?

for example: 0JT849 cable appears to be for X1 Yoga, and for 2560*1440 resolution. Would it do 4K and fit T15? (I thought it should provided it has 4 lanes).

thank you!

Hi Sea Breeze,

It is recommended to use the same FRU as the original when replacing panels.

There is no guarantee any modification would work smoothly unless somebody else can confirm doing this.

We do hope other members that have tried it can share their experience.
