AMD T14s 2nd SSD in WWAN M.2 slot

2020-10-07, 20:13 PM

It's not being recognised by my laptop. According to PSREF for Thinkpad T14s Gen 1 AMD, the machine supports two SSDs as follows:

Storage

• M.2 2242 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 2

• M.2 2280 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4

I consequently bought a Western Digital / SanDisk SN520 512GB SSD (SDAPMUW-512G). This is an M.2 2242 drive and, according to it's spec sheet and labelling, is a PCIe Gen3 x2 NVMe drive - in other words exactly what's needed. This model should be working in the WWAN slot in this laptop (yes, the AMD version) according to one user on Reddit. Furthermore I have tested the drive in an external M.2 enclosure and it works. However it does not work in the WWAN slot. I have formatted the drive using the external enclosure and reseated it multiple times in the WWAN slot. It is not being recognised in the BIOS. It does not appear in the boot list. It does not appear in the Secure Erase utility. It does not appear in the built-in diagnostics utility. It does not appear in Windows 10s disk and partition manager. It does not appear in Windows Device Manager. It just doesn't exist at all.

What could be the problem? Does my machine have a faulty WWAN slot? Are there differences in different production runs of the AMD T14s? Do I need a BIOS update - I'm on 1.05? Is the drive - being a 512GB model - maybe too power hungry or is that size not supported?

That portion of the spec doesn't say it supports two SSDs.  It says it supports either a 2242 (with mechanical extender) or a 2280 SSD.  Either would go in the primary slot.  It doesn't say anything about an SSD in the WWAN slot.

I don't find anything saying a 2nd SSD is supported.  Do you have a link to that Reddit post?

Re:AMD T14s 2nd SSD in WWAN M.2 slot

Looking over that Reddit post, I now see some differences. My model number is CL SN520 SDAPMUW-512G-1022. The Reddit user's model number is PC SN520 SDAPMUW-512G-1101. Judging by eBay pictures I could find, the latter may have been pulled from another laptop and includes what I can only guess is a Lenovo part number and FRU on the label:

LEN P/N: SSS0S57319

FRU: 01FR579

Can you confirm whether this is a Lenovo part, whether the WWAN slot in fact accepts that SSD model and whether the slot, perhaps, only accepts white-listed parts?

These drives are hard to get. If this pans out, could you point you point me to where I could source the Lenovo part in Ireland? I don't particularly want to go to eBay for this item, because you don't know whether you're getting something used or infected with a virus. It's also not clear to me whether the laptop permits secure-erasing the drive in that slot.

Re:AMD T14s 2nd SSD in WWAN M.2 slot

I also have the T14 Gen 2 AMD (20XK0019US) running Windows 10 on the main m.2 2280 ssd.

I tried installing a Western Digital SN520 nvme 2242 ssd in the WWAN slot.  When I reboot, black screen appears with this:

1802:  Unauthorized network card is plugged in - Power off and remove the network card (15B7/5005/15B7/5005)
System is halted

My SN520 is:

Western Digital PC SN520 NVMe SSD

M.2 2242-S3-B-M 512GB

SDAPMUW-512G

FW:  20250000

Date of manufacture:  24May2021

So it looks like Lenovo won't allow ssd's in the WWAN slot any more on T14 Gen 2 AMD (according to other users, the SN520 would work on previous generation T14 Gen 1 AMD).  Which is really disappointing.
