Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Refer the hardware maintenance manual of T440s to understand the installation and disassembly of hardware

components.

Best regards,

Mithun.

Hi @outouser,

Have you managed to remove the base cover?

I just want to warn you, be very carefull it is hard to remove it.

I got a crack on one side and I talked to support and they say it is not covered by warranty. Could be really expensive!

I belive it is Lenovo design issue, they made it really hard and for that premium price they should either redesign it or accept some return. (especially because I needed to open it twice because of an SSD drive compatibility issue!).

I come from HP laptops and there I always had a small lock for the harddrive bay, much simpler.

So be carefull :)

br,

Thanks for asking!

Yes i got it off but it was not that easy as it should be.

It is too much work to change harddrive or install new memory with there new T and X models (X240 and T440s).

T430s and X230 had easy access to harddrive and memory. I really hope that Lenovo will make next T and X more easily serviceable.

Also have an x240. Unscrewed the bottom and tried to get it off - very hard! Nothing to grip or lift, seems like you have to slowly lift in every little crack and nook and hope it works. Still have not been able to get it off.

Would appreciate someone posting a how-to with pictures or a YouTube video of how to open the new --40 series!

You'd think the designers would realize that people tend to break the locking clips all the time, especially if you need to pry it off.

I for one hate one-piece base covers. They're a massive pain to remove and install properly. Had enough of it with an X100e.

There's nothing wrong with you. I generally love Lenovo product, but this is far and away the worst case design that I've ever come across in 20 years of IT work. IMHO, the engineer(s) that came up with this design should all be fired for cause. I will not purchase any more T440S notebooks just because of this awful design. Even though the case itself is metal, unless there's a special tool out there, there's practically no way to take this thing apart without marring the upper plastic pieces and/or breaking something in the process. Very horrible design indeed.

We don't purchase a ton of Lenovo laptops but we switched from dell about 5 years ago when we first discovered the awesomeness that was the highly reliable and servicable (and always loved by clients) T4xxs series and X2xxs series laptops.  We maybe purchase 20-30 a year total..  never had complaints.. then the T440s came out, placed an order for 15 of them, so far two people have returned them, and the others are constantly complaining about the track pad design,  now today i had to install a new (bigger) SSD and broke the case trying to remove it..  I'm so pissed.   We're likely going to be switching brands again and it sucks because we invested so heavily into the Lenovo T/X series laptops.

Any extra suggestions here on how to remove the base cover?

2014-10-03, 15:15 PM

Having read the stories about how hard it was to remove the base cover of the T440s, I ordered mine with Lenovo installed SSD to avoid having to risk breaking the base cover.  Now after two months of ownership the Samnsung SSD drive installed by Lenovo is failing and I have received a warranty replacement drive ... So I have to do what I had hoped to avoid ... pop off the base cover.

I have printed out the relevant pages from the Hardware Maint. Manual, and have several small plastic pry bars that I have used in disassembling iPhones that should help minimize the risk of maring the case.

Before I dive in, does anyone have any extra tips they could share that would help minimize my risk?

Thanks in advance!

Jim
