Best TPFanControl settings for T500?

2010-02-23, 1:01 AM

I’m very pleased with TPFanControl for controlling the fan in my T500. My computer is now 100% silent nearly all the time.

TPFanControl is a freeware program that works wonders controlling the fan in a ThinkPad, but there is no support, and its default settings are for the TP T61.

I have no way of knowing if, for example, the temperature listed as ‘PCI’ is actually the CPU temperature and vice versa in a T500. I also have no way of knowing which temperature settings are best suited for my T500.

Does anybody have information or experiences to share?

Here follows a bit about my own T500 configuration and my fan settings:

    Integrated graphics, P8400 (2,26 GHz) CPU. 4GB RAM. 80GB Intel SSD (containing Win7 Ult. 64 bit along with all programs and all Office files). In the bay a 640GB HDD (containing all music and video files – this way the HDD only starts when I can’t hear it anyway.)

    For everyday use, tpfancontrol says my CPU is in the 40ºC-45ºC range. Charging the battery raises the temperature (a lot more than any Office task), and so does opening a number of websites with flash ads at the same time.

My choice of settings is:

Level=38      0

Level=47      4

Level=52      7

Level=58      128

Level=75      128

(This translates into: The fan goes on at 47ºC. It will keep on blowing at level 4 until the temperature is all the way down to 38ºC. If the temperature rises above 52ºC the fan will change to level 7. If it rises above 58ºC the BIOS will take over.)

It’s me again … Does anyone know of ballpark figures? I have no idea about this.

Should I worry if my CPU temperature shows 60ºC? Or how about 70 ºC? And are the sensors reliable?

At the moment, my T500 is set to almost never exceed 50 ºC.  I suppose this is healthy for the PC but do I need to keep temperatures that low? I’m very sensitive to noise and not particularly sensitive to a hot keyboard.

Lately, the fan is coming on more often. I suppose I should clean the fan. (I also have no idea how to do this; more about this here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Anything-I-should-know-before-attempting-to-clean-the-fan-in-my/td-p/256641)

Hi m8,

IMO you're using a too high settings for your fan, a maximim controlled level of 7 in TPFanControl to cool off 50 degrees seems unnecessary. I have a W500, which is in a lot of ways same as your machine. Check my settngs out:

Level=50 0
Level=55 1
Level=65 3
Level=80 7
Level=90 64

50 degrees and no fan is pretty much okay, if it can stay at 50 without a fan when idle - i find that okay.

55+ is what my machine jumps almost immediately when i give it a task. Fan at lowest speed.

65+ for slightly higher tasks, usually stays 67 when i watch a movie in hi def and fool around with VMware.

80+ this is where the games get me to. I want maximim fan speed for those. Usually it stays around 84 degrees when i play things like Skyrim or WoW. I don't want it any higher

90 fan at disengaged mode - maximum speed. My computer would shut down at around 94 because of overheating, i don't want that, so at this point i attempt to mitigate overheating with everyting i got. Never seen it get this high though since i satrted using TPFanConrol :)

Thanks dshulga,
Very good to know that your machine survives this treatment. I must say, mine is always pretty cool, and since I enjoy complete silence more than a cool handrest, I'll steer my settings in your direction.

Also interesting that your W500 gets so hot. Maybe it's the graphics card, which is always on on the W500.
For Word, Outlook and everyday tasks, my T500 without a graphics card cruises along in the 38-45 degrees area.
