Bitlocker PIN + USB-C Thunderbolt dock

2018-05-22, 16:28 PM

We recently started using Bitlocker with a PIN at startup. On all our laptops using the "old"-type dock, that you click your laptop into everything is working fine, the users put the laptops into the dock, turn it on, type in the Bitlocker PIN using the external monitor and keyboard, and then processed into Windows.

Our problem is with everyone using the new Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock. When the users connect the laptops to the dock using the cable and then power on from the dock, the laptop will power on (the LED in the ThinkPad logo lights up) but the monitors and keyboard connected to the dock is not working, and then after some time the laptop will power off again.

We currently use a workaround where the users power on, type in the Bitlocker PIN and login to Windows before connecting the laptop to the dock, but this not a proper solution.

We have Enabled both "Thunderbolt(TM) device" and "USB device" under "Support in Pre Boot Environment" in the "Thunderbolt 3"-menu in BIOS, but it still doesn't work.

Have anyone else experienced this problem? Or does anyone know of a proper solution.

We have exactly the same issues described by ghbjj with our 10 Notebooks. Updated every Notebook to newest UEFI BIOS & Driver Version. Firmware Version for the Dock (Hybrid USB-C with USB-A) is still the Initial Release Version cause there is no newer firmware available till today.

We tried with both DP & HDMI Cables and different Monitors, including the Lenovo ThinkVision A16240WT0.

Also, playing with the Display-Options in UEFI BIOS (Config-> Display) does not happen to solve the issue...

  • Boot Display Device --> External Display
  • Shared Display Priority --> Tried both USB Type-C and HDMI, did not help
  • Boot Time Extension --> 10s, did not help

Notebook: Thinkpad T480

  • UEFI BIOS Version: 1.17 (N24ET42W) (Released: 2018-10-01)
  • ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C With USB-A Dock Drive Driver Version: V1.00.13 (Released: 2018-10-15)

Docking Station: ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C With USB-A Dock

  • ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C With USB-A Dock Drive Firmware Version: V10010 (Released:  2018-07-19)

In our case, it is also impossible to get the UEFI-Screen to the external Display. So wheter UEFI nor Bitlocker is show on the external Displays.

Does anybody know an actual solution to that issue?

I have a similar issue with Thinkpad X280. Thunderbolt USB-C with USD-A dock uses DisplayLink driver and that driver is not loaded at that point.

Apparently there is no support for DisplayLink devices in pre-boot environment.

What is the status of this.  We just purchased quite a few lenovo docks and really need our laptops to be able to boot to bitlocker and have the docks send the signal to the monitors.  Currently, docks can't send the signal to the monitors in windows pre-boot.  Don't even get the lenovo startup splash screen on the monitors.

It should be possible to change a BIOS setting to get display output to external screen at startup.

BIOS Setup -> Config -> Display -> Boot Display Device

This doesn't work.  It is happening on the two different USB-C docks we have with four different laptop models.

What is the 4-digit model of the dock, and the 4-digit model of the ThinkPad?  I'll try to set up same config here to see what is going on.

laptop 20kg
dock 40af

If bitlocker is on the laptop, and the lid is closed, the dock will not send video signal to the external monitors. It gets hung up at the bitlocker screen. The boot-up lenovo splash screen isn't sent to the monitors either.

Thanks

Unfortunately there is no solution for that 40AF dock.  It is a hybrid dock which uses DisplayLink graphics.  This is explained in the user guide.  https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/options/thinkpad_hybrid_usb-c_with_usb-a_dock_ug_en_v1.0_201802.pdf
