Broken AC port

2020-09-05, 18:01 PM

Hey everyone, last year I bought my mother a T430a on ebay for her birthday last year so she could use a computer from anywhere in the house. She used it all the time and really liked it but a couple weeks ago she dropped it while it was still plugged in, breaking off the yellow cylinder inside the AC port. It's the part that the male connector of the charger plugs in to. I could really use some help fixing this problem. Is it an simple fix with easy-to-find parts? Or will it require something more involved? I'm pretty good at PC triage and all that but I have no experience with laptops. We really don't want to get another one since it's perfectly functional outside of the broken port. I'll post pictures in case my description wasn't good enough.

I'd appreciate any help or advice!

Welcome to the forum.

The power jack is on what's called the DC-in sub card. You can buy the whole card inexpensively on places like eBay, e.g. DC-in Power Jack Board Connector For Lenovo Thinkpad T420S T430S Sub Card so there's no need to mess with soldering.

The procedure to replace this card is in the T430s Hardware Maintenance Manual pp 87-88.

Just wanted to give a quick update. All that info helped tremendously. Managed to navigate the labyrinth of wires, unscrew all the screws and super tiny connectors without breaking anything and replaced the part. Then reassembled that mess without forgetting anything or putting the connectors in the wrong wayor in the wrong spot.

Certainly was a learning experience. Wish it didn't require so much work to replace the part but in the end it all worked out.

Thanks for the help!
