Can not partition harddrive on Thinkpad T400

2008-09-20, 17:16 PM
I wanted to partition my harddrive on T400 to create a D drive.  I had no problems before partitioning my harddrives before on Windows XP.  However, there is a service partition of about 6 Gigs.  I tried partitioning my drive by inserting a Windows XP disk but i get a BSOD.  Partition magic doesn't work.  How can I partition my drive and remove the Service Partition?

I've been successful using Acronis Disk Director 10.   It is similar to PartionMagic but has been updated for Vista.   It is not as good as PartionMagic but unfortunately PartionMagic has had no updates for years since it was sold by PowerQuest.

The standalone bootable CD for Acronis Disk Director did the job but has significant problems.

1. It did not detect the TrackPoint or mouse pad.   I had to use keyboard shortcuts which were clumsy.

2. It left the system unbootable which requires a bootable Vista DVD to "Repair and Recover" the boot records.

I had a Vista DVD but you normally don't have one when you buy a T400.
