Can't enter BIOS, brand new T480 - HELP!

2019-01-26, 12:19 PM

So brand new T480, all drivers and BIOS up to date, but I can't enter BIOS unless I choose "restart" on Windows 10 (up to date)... if I use "Shut down" I don't get the "press enter to interrupt boot" option when I start the computer again.

Gone through all possible BIOS settings, disabled "secure boot" and all that, enabled legacy ect.. all USB devices unpluged,

still will not come up with the message "press enter to interrupt boot", tried F1 F12 also

enabled diagnostic boot and it says press F1, but pressing F1 does not work...

The only thing I can figure is happening here is that the keyboard is been loaded during startup too slow, and is off during the critical time... If you choose restart in windows then I think the keyboard does turn off? maybe? it works fine, you can get into BIOS...

The thing is, if my computer ever bricks, I won't be able to boot it using a bootable USB recovery disk, and I'm coming off just that a bricked DELL

That's entirely normal and by design if fast startup is enabled.  In that mode, shutdown is more like hibernation and accessing BIOS or booting something else isn't safe.

As stated above, use restart or do a full (real) shut down with the SHIFT key.  Another option if you need frequent BIOS or boot menu access at boot time is to disable fast startup:

Search on “Power options” in the Start Menu.  Select "choose what the power buttons do", then "change settings that are currently unavailable" then disable "turn on fast startup".

Did you by chance enable the longer "diagnostic" boot up mode  vs.  the default "quick" boot that just flashes the red Lenovo logo and then continues on?  (I think the names are a little different than what I said ... but they are something like that............)

as stupid as that sounds......................

On my T480 I only get the prompt to enter BIOS is in the "quick boot" mode...

If my post helps a Kudo is appreciated, if I answer your question, please mark it ”Accepted Solution“ and give it a Kudo! ... Some years ago I worked for IBM. Currently I do not work for, nor do I speak for Lenovo or IBM.

Hold down the Shift key while picking Shut down, let it shut down, press the power button, then press enter to interrupt boot.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!
