Cant update bios settings. "Failed to save storage: AmdSetup. Status: Write Protected"

2020-10-30, 12:08 PM

Hi,

Just got my new T14 AMD gen 1, I upgraded it with an additional 16GB ram and a new Samsung EVO 1TB SSD with the plan to install a fresh Ubuntu on it.

But after the hardware update I can't change any bios settings, I get a series of error messages when trying tu save the bios settings:
"Formset ([*SomeValue]) [*SameId] Failed to save storage: AmdSetup. Status: Write Protected.".

What should I do? :(

Best regards,
Kristofer Carlsson

I have seen this before.  If you reboot and try again, I think it will work.  Sorry for this trouble.

Ok, so I put the pre installed SSD back in and now the included windows boots and I can change BIOS settings normally again. Maybe I need to change / reset some settings in BIOS (safe boot?) before switching to new SSD and installing Ubuntu?

No, I don't think it's related to your SSD.  It's just something that happens rarely, and right now I'm not sure the reason why.

So my SSD switch just happened to "fix" the issue by requiring a hard reboot then. Well that's reassuring :S I actually did a couple of restarts with the new SSD in, but maybe not a hard reset with the On/Off button, just soft restarts with CTRL+ALT+DEL from the bios/boot menus. Can't remember... Anyway, will give it another go with the new SSD then.

Well back with the new SSD in. I don't remember the exact details since i rebooted and tried the same thing so many times now. But this is roughly what happened:

I got the same error on 1st boot after the change, rebooted again with hard reset using the power button, I do that now... Now the diagnostics started automatically (maybe a miss-clicked, but I don't think so...).

Restarted again and managed to reset to default bios settings successfully. Rebooted yet again and now I changed a few settings such as Graphical/Text mode, CTRL and Fn key mapping etc. Same error happened, rebooted, worked on 2nd try... Did that a couple of times and it seems kind of random when the issue occurs.

I then tried to disable secure boot, didn't work, same error. Tried like 10 times, all failed. And now any change seem to fail with 100% certainty, can't even reset to default bios settings anymore. Same error all the time. No clue what is related to what but this is the situation now... What the hell.

I have not seen this problem to the extent that you're reporting.  Is there anything on the new SSD?  I wonder if something on the SSD is exposing this problem somehow.  Could you try clearing the SSD with the built-in ThinkShield Secure Wipe (press F12, then choose App menu)?

The SSD is a completely new Samsung 970 Evo 1TB, I haven't put anything on it.

ThinkShield Secure Wipe was disabled in BIOS (I disabled it before). I re-enabled it, surprise, it actually worked! But still couldn't find Secure Wipe in the App menu... Enabled Device Guard randomly, which I also disabled before in order to disable Secure Boot. And after that Secure Wipe appeared in the App menu. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Continued with the wipe you suggested, rebooted, disabled Device Guard, rebooted and finally disabled Secure Boot, one setting change at a time. No errors and I have now installed Ubuntu 20.10 without any issues.

Hopefully I will never have to touch the BIOS again, seems rather unstable... I'm at version R1BET36W (1.05) if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the responsive support anyway!

I cannot help you but I just got my T14 AMD Gen1 and I have exactly the same problem.

The only difference is that I didn't change the SSD and its the empty stock one.

I didnt install any OS so far... perhaps it helps when win10 gets installed

EDIT: Tried rebooting but it didnt help

Well, I don't think the OS should matter. But then I'm not read up on the Secure Boot, Device Guard and ThinkShield stuff.

The only advice I can give is to continue rebooting... I did that a lot. And every update after re-enabling Device Guard has worked for me, including disable it again. But I haven't tested a lot and will not change the bios now when it's finally working with the settings I want.

A bios update may be a good idea, fingers crossed it work properly.
