Connecting Three Monitors Through Dock and Laptop

2021-04-16, 1:23 AM

I have a Lenovo T440P on a Ultra Dock 40A2.  I have been running these same three monitors for more than six months:

  • A DVI-D  connected to the Dock with DVI-D cable
  • A DisplayPort connected to the Dock with DisplayPort cable
  • An HDMI to mini-displayport adapter to the laptop

Today, I had to move my office. The cables were disconnected, but put back in the same configuration.

The laptop was probably restarted with one or more of the monitors not hooked up.

If I start up the laptop with only the DVI-D monitor connected to the laptop, I get it to recognize the DVI-D monitor.

However, when the DisplayPort and HDMI monitors are connected, I can tell the laptop screen to disconnect, but when

I tell it to recognize the third (DVI-D) monitor, the laptop screen comes up instead.

If I press Input on the DVI-D monitor, it says Checking Signal and then No Signal, Entering the power saving mode shortly.

Hello alex20850l!

Welcome to community forums

Are you running Windows 10? If yes, which version of Windows 10?

Is the main screen on when using the 3 external displays before? The Thinkpad T440P can support 3 independent displays including the main screen on the laptop.

It can support 2 external displays via VGA (3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz0 or via DP or mDP cable and you can refer to the product sheet: https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad_T440p

You can try installing the firmware of the docking station here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/accessory/docks/thinkpad-ultra-dock/40a2/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Advanced%20Firmware

Let us know how it goes.

Also try to do a reset of the docking station itself:

- Unplug the dock from power, computer and external devices.
- Hold the power button on the dock down for 45 seconds.
- Plug everything back in.

Regards

I have the same config but am in the process of buying my first external monitor.  From the specs is says

Max resolution: 1920x1200@60Hz (VGA); 3840x2160@60Hz (DP via mDP cable), therefore I can support

a 4K monitor, correct?  I just don't want to over-buy and not be able to use the 4K resolution.  I assume I

should connect to the Ultra Dock display Port connection, correct?

Looking at the specs for the available connection types it looks like full 4K is not supported.

DVI-D 2560x1600

Display Port 1.2 2560x1440

HDMI 1.4 4096x2160 AT 24Hxz (HMSI 2.0 required for 4K).

Am I correct in this?

@RatherBSailing  If you're referring to the same laptop model, please refer to the product spreadsheet provided earlier. If it's not, please create another thread.

As per the product spreadsheet mentioned earlier, the maximum resolution it can get is UHD(3840 x 2160)

Since you are using a dock, you can use this guide or setup: https://support.lenovo.com/ph/en/solutions/pd029622-display-and-video-output-configurations-docking-stations#Ultra%20Dock
