DVD/CD ROM Driver Error

2010-08-19, 17:10 PM

I have a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad 410 that came with a DVD/CD RW Drive.  The computer does not recognize the cd drive.  In the Device Manager a yellow exclamation mark appears next to the MAT**bleep**A DVD drive and a message appears Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

I tried running a MS Fixit which showed the device was recognized briefly but then I got the same old message that there was a problem with the device.  Do I have a bad drive?  Help!

Sounds like a hardware problem.

Call customer service. Maybe they should replace your optical unit

Best regards.

One simple thing to try is to shut the computer down, remove the drive (there are two switches used to remove it, see here: http://www.thinkpads.com/2010/03/07/lenovo-thinkpad-t410-upgrading/), and then boot up the computer with the CD drive REMOVED. This way, Windows recognizes there is no drive and doesn't try to load it. Then, reinstall the drive and boot back up. Windows should now recognize the drive and try to initialize it. If the problem still exists, call support and they will send you a replacement drive!
