Desktop Icons Issue

2008-12-09, 1:44 AM

Multiple people have reported this problem.  I talked to Lenovo Tech Support today and the person told me he had never heard of this problem and that they do not monitor the Forums for systemic issues like this.  Frankly, this person seemed clueless on many fronts so I am not sure either of those things are valid.  It was an extremely frustrating telephone call.

In any case,  I would like to rollback to the original version of the ATI drivers as well as "Presentation Director" to see if this fixes the problem.   Does anyone have or know where to get the previous version(s) so I can test to see if it also has this problem?

Thanks

What is the problem that you're having?  Desktop Icons Issue isn't really enough information to go on.

Which T series system do you have, and what operating system are you running?

Re tech support not monitoring the forum, there are a few Lenovo employees roaming around in here helping out on a volunteer basis, but this is not an official support channel. Instead, this is designed to be a user-to-user support and discussion forum.

I am running a T500/2801 with the XP Pro "Downgrade".  The issue is where closing the lid of the computer resets the icons to the upper left quadrant of the screen as if ithe screen resolution changed (like Safe Mode has a habit of doing).

In general, is there a way to report a problem to Lenovo using a "ticket": or something?

i thought i recalled coming across this issue. have you used the System Update tool and installed all the recommended Windows XP hotfixes? also - do you have the power options set to "do nothing" when you close the lid?

I "solved" this propblem... actually I was pleasantly surprised that it stopped whern I was tuning the system to reduce the many processes and services that run as part of the preloaded HDD image.

I'm not really sure which of the 17 processes/services I killed "fixed" it but two are susptect: Probable:  Presentation Director and may be inmplicated: the ATI hotkey poller. I am running the latest ATI drivers.

I got a new T500 yesterday with the XP downgrade, and I am also having the same issue.  When I close the lid and open it again icons that are in the right third of the screen shift over to the left as if they were moved because of a resolution change.

I am currently working on figuring this one out.  ajt, thanks for indicating some possibilities.

I'll post another response here if/once I find out exactly how to fix this bug.

Any additional help from the community would be great.

You might try disabling Presentation Director to see if that is the root cause.  I beleive this is called TPFNF7 but it doesn't show up using MSConfig.  It is a startup item in the registry that executes tpfnf7sp.exe.  The executable is located in C:\Program Files\Lenovo\NPDirect.  If you don't want to edit the rigistry to stop this from running you could rename the file temporarily and reboot.

Again,  I am not sure this is the culprit as I had stopped a lot of junk from running and this was one of them.  The icon problem was gone after I did my surgery.

I just tried to rename the excutable so Presentation Director (PD) won't run. PD is disabled but the issue persists...hmm
