End of Support for T420s?

2018-01-10, 6:05 AM

I already learned, that Lenovo thinks Windows 10 is not suitable for the T420s as it's not selectable as used operating system, as well as that the T420s is seen as out of service prior to the usual 5 years after end of sales as per the matrix of Spectre and Meltdown support fixes as the T420s is not mentioned there, although in official sales until March 2013.

So, at what exact date it went out of support and why isn't it possible to find any information?

I'm using Thinkpads since 18 years now but this really annoys me as the laptop is still performing well and not being able to secure it against this threat doesn't make me feel comfortable...

I'm not sure about "end of support".  Older systems have fewer updates, but when I look at T420s drivers and software, the list was updated as late as December.  T420s and other Sandy Bridge systems were never certified for use with windows 10, but some users are using it.  T420s recovery disks were only ever made with XP, Vista and windows 7.

Sure will older systems get fewer updates, but in this real essential case the T420s doesn't get an update at all, and this during the interval of standard support - spo the support sees to be ended prior than normal but without any notice or explanation.
And nowhere you can find any official information about an EOS date.

Looking at this document, looks like the "2" (and older) generation of laptops are End of Support - https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/len-18282

However, I was reading through the US Lenovo Warranty statement and I'd honestly think they'd be free and clear - https://download.lenovo.com/lenovo/lsw/ls_wsa_us_en.pdf, Section 2, Part (ix) "any pre-existing defects in your product that occurred on or before the date of this Agreement;"

The Intel defect way pre-dates your warranty agreement with Lenovo. Heck, I guess they'd have an out for every laptop.

Looking at their current PSRefs, looks like the EoS is six years from the Announce Date and the T420s were announced throughout 2011.

Now, I just did a quick search for a couple of the processors that came out with the T420s and found that Intel did release microcode updates for Linux. It is possible for you to apply the microcode through Linux. How to do that, no clue.

For example the i5-2520M processor's microcode is downloadable from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27431/Linux-Processor-Microcode-Data-File?product=52229

I just googled "i5-2520M linux microcode patch" and it was the first link.

Good Luck!

Re: End of Support for T420s?

The strange thing is that T410 are listed in the section "EOL" which don't get support anymore while T420 are not listed there but also not included in the list of Meltdown / Spectre fixes.

Same is true for T520...

The exclusion of pre-existing defects would apply for ALL devices in all lines of product, but apart of the devices which are clearly too old to be in service like the T410 (sold until July 2011, so out of service since August 2016) and listed in the EOL database the T420 sold until March 2013 and should drop out of service in April this year but obviously is already out, but still not entered in the EOL database.

That's really inconsistent...

Yea, I've found some similiar documentation issues with Lenovo on the server side of their business. I always chalked it up to a rough transition from IBM to Lenovo.

Anyways - good luck!

Lenovo will apparently release a BIOS update against Spectre for  the Tx20-generation - look at the list again, T420, X220, W520 etc. are now included.

Well, at least it seems they start, but unfortunately not all machine types are covered until now, especially the faster Core I7 ones but as they started I'm hopeful they will also cover them as it would be bad to have the higher ended ones not covered...

I was just checking if more than the initial 4 versions of T420 have made it to the list just to find out, that the T420 dropped out of the list and again seems to not get support - Lenovo, you really seem to like loosing long term customers!

It appears as if T420/T520s have made it back to the list. Hopefully they won't drop off again.

Me, I have been using various ThinkPads for almost 20 years, never had any major problems. Some old ones are still beeing utilized as Terminal or Linux computers. My current T520 was bought in 2012 and has proven to be a solid rock - so far.

@Lenovo: To be clear, now we do not talk about a broken hinge or keyboard, but about a bug in the processor architecture that already existed at the time the computer was sold. Even worse, you manufacturers have been made aware about this major security impact already in June 2017 - 6 months ago! It would not be acceptable if you were taking advantage of the delay and information gap in just simply declaring Tx20s as EOL/EOS, now as we are already in 2018.
