Error after bios upgrade on T490

2020-05-16, 4:25 AM
Hi, today I ran the Lenovo Vantage update wich included a bios upgrade recommended for my T490. I try to keep it updated since I baught it a few months ago. After the update installation in win10 the reboot request appeared so I confirmed the reboot clicking 'yes'. Until that moment it was as usual, but after rebooting the following messge is shown and then the laptop shuts down... secure flash authentication failed Please, I'd appreciate any help. I have 3yrs warranty but I really can't afford to take it to the service and wait the repair. I guess someone at Lenovo must know how to resolve this kind of issue since it was triggered by a Lenovo oficial update... Thanks!

Hi, just wanted to let you know that after a few reboots the system finally started up with previous bios version (1.61). Then I run the check updates in Lenovo Vantage again and after a new reboot this time it was installed correctly.

I also had problems with the 1.17 update (T495s). The update finished without problems, but in the first reboot Windows did not boot.

The screen just turned "black", no error code or message.

After some trail and error, I solved the problem by resetting the default UEFI configuration.

These kind of things should never happen.

Today I have tried to upgrade my T495 BIOS to the 1.21 version.  To my surprise  Windows 10 rebooted to a  black screen instead of a default login dialog.

I have switched to Safe mode and deactivated my vega video adapter's driver. Looks like 1.21 BIOS has broke all Vega drivers, as none of them were working except a default windows driver.

I had an issue similar to yours, after upgrading BIOS to 1.17 on T495s, the windows booted to a black screen every time, until I changes the "UMA frame buffer size" setting in BIOS to 2G, instead of 128mb.

Even if I never changed this myself, 1.17 update changed it. Resetting to default also changes this to 2G, apparently (weird, as it was set on 128mb by default on 1.17).

I narrowed the issue down in my case to Hyper-V. If I activate the Hyper-v feature in win 10 pro, then it does not work with a lower setting for UMA frame buffer size.

Did you also have Hyper-v activated when you got the black screen issue?

I haven´t enabled Hyper-V in this computer. UMA shows as 2G in the setup.

I can confirm - T495s, UEFI 1.17: If the UMA buffer size is set to 128 MB, Windows does not boot. The others values, 2GB, 1 GB, 500 MB, 256 MB, all work.
