FN - CTRL swap on ThinkPad T400 / T500 keyboard [SOLVED]

2010-02-02, 14:20 PM

Hi guys.

I've disassembled T500 firmware and found the place where possible to make a patch for FN-CTRL swap.

Now I need testers. If you are interested, then send me request via email (middleton@list.ru).

Just for your information: I've already made such a BIOS mod for the following Lenovo laptops:

IdeaPad Y550: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-and-U-series-Laptops/FN-CTRL-swap-on-Lenovo-Y550-keyboard-SOLVED/td-p/184220

It wasn't so easy to make CTRL-FN patch for ThinkPads as for IdeaPad laptops. But after three weeks of hard work I place here the final versions for the following ThinkPads:

R400, T400
R500
T400s
T500, W500
W700, W700ds
X61, X61s

You can download these and other CTRL-FN BIOS mods in my topic at notebookreview.com. Also you can post your requests on CTRL-FN BIOS modifications there (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=474396).

Disclaimer:

Lenovo has no relation to these BIOS-es. These patches are completely unofficial. They provided "as is" without any warranties from Lenovo. Lenovo has never tested or approved these patches and don't support them. You will be solely responsible for any damage to your computer system or loss of data that results from flashing or using of the patched BIOS.
Use it at your own risk.

Thank you so much for making this patched BIOS!  It works great, and it is so nice to be able to touch type without pressing the wrong keys because I am not used to the FN-CTRL key placement.  I appreciate all your effort!  I wish that Lenovo had chosen to provide a BIOS switch for the FN-CTRL key placement for their recent existing customers, but your patch does the job perfectly.

Middleton,

You seem like a very technically proficient individual who is trying to help the broader community by offering modified BIOS versions  to provide unique functions like this CTRL-FN swap.

I have a couple of concerns:

1) Lenovo periodically updates the BIOS of various systems to improve performance and address issues which materialize in the ever evolving customer environment - as new drivers, new operating systems, and new hardware interact.   I hope customers will choose to take advantage of the offical Lenovo BIOS releases knowing that Lenovo has tested them and fully supports them.

2) While we can say that customers use non-approved /  non-supported BIOS at their own risk, and everyone nods their heads and agrees that it is at their own risk, if the system becomes "bricked" during the install of a non-Lenovo BIOS we find ourselves in a difficult situation.   Lenovo should not have to absorb the repair cost, yet customers may not be happy having to pay the bill themselves and we have a satisfaction issue on our hands that potentially puts the future customer / Lenovo relationship at risk.  I'm also sure that you don't want customers looking for you to be responsible if something goes wrong while installing your update.

3) Customers seeking warranty service and support should be running approved Lenovo BIOS and drivers.

I appreciate the thoughtful consideration of these points as I realize that these versions can be posted / hosted elsewhere.

Best regards,

Mark

REQUEST: T61p/X61 bios mod to remove ICH8M I/O sata controller capping to sata-I 1.5Gbps speed

Hi middleton,

Perhaps you can put your bios modding prowess to help T61/X61 users whose ICH8M I/O chipset is capped to 1.5Gbps sata-I speed. History and details of the required mod are here:

+1, it works perfect!

The left Ctrl and Fn key are completely switched. It's so great to have Ctrl located at the edge of the keyboard, just like most desktop keyboards.

This is completely a slap to Lenovo's face. There are so many demands on the keyboard swap since the blog announcement and yet Lenovo decided to ignore existing customers request. This proves it's not a hardware limitation.

Lenovo, if you're still listening, please release a official BIOS that support this feature. Don't blame the community for warranty and support issue.

Hi Junk2008,

While no one can stop you from strapping a turbo charger onto a car engine, neither can you blame the engine manufacturer for a blown engine because of your actions.

Although there are people asking for a keyboard fix, there are also people that chose to adapt and live with the intended design. Hope you can understand that.

Cheers

middletown,

This is wonderful news, thank you for your efforts. As mentioned, this is an amazing response to call out Lenovo's bluff of the "hardware" supposedly required to do this. Perhaps it will encourage them to release official versions like this.

I have one question - is the T400s supported here? If not, is there a version that you could make? I feel the computer has gotten the unfortunate short end of the stick - given the newer model keyboard (like with the T{4,5}10(s) , it seems it should have been given the feature in BIOS, yet it seems to be lumped into the older models in that it won't get it.

Thanks again!
