Re: FN - CTRL swap on ThinkPad T400 / T500 keyboard [SOLVED]

2010-03-07, 15:10 PM

procom,

I'm not asking Lenovo to go either Fn/Ctrl or Ctrl/Fn, but to have the option in BIOS to allow user to switch. It's already been done in newer T410/T510 BIOS.

Please backport this BIOS option back to existing T400/T500 customers.

Hi Junk2008,

While no one can stop you from strapping a turbo charger onto a car engine, neither can you blame the engine manufacturer for a blown engine because of your actions.

Although there are people asking for a keyboard fix, there are also people that chose to adapt and live with the intended design. Hope you can understand that.

Cheers

I've just analyzed T510 firmware and can say the following:

T510 uses the same Embedded Controller (Hitachi processor inside) as T500, T400 etc. FN is still connected to the separate I/O port and not included in general keyboard matrix. T510's firmware emulates pressing FN just like I do in my patches for old ThinkPads.

So what does it mean? There is no hardware reasons, which do not allow to make CTRL-FN patch for already existing ThinkPads. I just can't understand why Lenovo don't want to make the patch because if you have source code, then you can create such CTRL-FN patch without making any effort.

I can confirm this is NOT working on a german keyboard layout T400 with Firewire. =/ I was really excited about this. =( Going to try again tonight, though... (I downgraded the BIOS from the current version to the current-1 version. I then executed your patch. Did not work)

Make your information more exact: You couldn't flash my patch OR you flashed it but the patch didn't swap FN and CTRL.

I was able to patch (I first had to downgrade the BIOS to an older version), but FN and CTRL are as always. No change. I have a german keyboard. My model is 2767WC8. It has a firewire port.

I did it!

It is working now! I just had to downgrade to a 2.xx firmware first. Actually make sure you downgrade to a BIOS firmware that has a smaller version number in BOTH "Embedded Controller version" and "BIOS version".

My failure was that I downgraded the BIOS only one version, so that BIOS version changed, but Embedded Controller version stayed the same. Thus, when using the patched BIOS updater of middleton, it did not patch my Embedded Controller.

So:

1) Downgrade to

2.12-1.01 2.12 (7UET64WW) 1.01 (7VHT12WW)

for example.

2) Use middletons patched updater when in windows.

3) ????

4) Profit.

Hi,

I have the same issue, with my T400 it is not working. After instaling updated bios fn is still fn and ctrl is still ctrl. I have UK model with firewire port.

Any idea what's wrong?

Thanks a lot.

See previous post written by akurei. He solved the problem for T400.

Re: FN - CTRL swap on ThinkPad T400 / T500 keyboard [SOLVED]

Yeah, i can see it now. But now the issue is i'm running 64bit OS and old bios 2.xx can not be used under 64bit OS. I getting error message "driver loading failed" therefore I assume the issue is in 32bit flasher. Is there any way to modify 64bit flasher to use that old bios files?

Thanks for help.

EDIT: now I see, there is a bootable Cd bios update available, this should do the trick
