HELP! Thinkpad Ultra Dock not activating external monitors - T490 laptop Thinkpad

Hi all,

 

I purchased both a T490 and an ultra docking station. Both worked for about a month, then the dock (i think) abruptly stopped working. I plug the laptop into the dock, and neither monitor turns on. The external mouse and keyboard still work. I've tried everything I could find on the forum, but all the drivers and firmware are already installed (from what I have seen). 

 

Please help, I have tons of work coming up very soon and I am severely limited with this tiny screen.

Hi Refrigerator! Welcome to our forums community. Have you tried connecting the external monitor directly to the laptop's USB-C or HDMI port? Have you tried installing the firmware of the docking station? If not, you can get it here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/accessory/docks/thinkpad-ultra-docking-station/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Advanced%20Firmware.

Hi Jwes,

 

Yes I have tried attaching the HDMI directly to the laptop. This works perfectly fine. I've also installed the latest firmware (thanks for your link), yet my monitors still do not activate when the laptop is plugged into the dock. I submitted a ticket with Lenovo, and they sent me a new dock. This new dock still doesn't work, even with the new firmware installed.

Did this issue ever get resolved. I have the same issue. My docking station stopped working a few works ago, it works with another laptop and also I am able to connect directly to the monitors just not through the dock, the keyboard and mouse work fine.

Same is issue here, started happening on July 21 of 2020, in the evening of Central Standard Time.

Changed the Power Cable to my Docking station adaptor and it now works. 

Apparently the power docking station wasn't getting sufficient power. only power to charge the laptop and not enough to activate the peripherals

I am having this issue with my laptop and docking station.

 

I have updated all of the drivers/firmware on the computer and the docking station.

 

I have 1 HDMI external monitor connected and 1 display port monitor connected.

 

They work individually on my laptop (have to use an adaptor for the 1) on the HDMI port, the computer detects them (I can see them in my settings), they have external power sources, but they will not display anything. 

 

They worked on Friday and I docked my laptop again Monday morning and no luck.

 

Any suggestions?

Changed Subject line to reflect my T580 laptop model.

 

Setup:

ThinkPad Ultra Docking Station Type: 40AJ
(2) ThinkVision P24q-10 monitors

- mini-Display port-to-Display Port

- HDMI

(1) Off-brand monitor

- VGA

 

Came in after long Covid layoff, to the ThinkVisions flickering. They would go black for seconds at a time, no rhyme reason. Ironically, the one component NOT Lenovo (off-brand monitor) is the only thing working. 

Performed a lot of troubleshooting: reseat/swap/reboots/powercycles, tested successfully from ThinkVisions directly to T580 and a desktop with Display Port (to me, this eliminated the monitors/video cables).

Installed the latest firmware. Eventually (can't point to a single event), my monitors remained black - no display. Even my push-button options on the monitor (to change Source) started working intermittently, for some reason. In Windows, the Display Properties can see all 3 monitors. 

 

Called Lenovo Support: 877-453-6686
Unfortunately for others, this may not be helpful, but they are replacing my Ultra Docking station (still under warranty).
Tech kept asking about any "updates" that have run. Advised our office enterprise rolls out Windows updates automatically, so no telling.

I asked if this was an issue with the Ultra Docking Station. [My Interpretation of her corporate response] was that Lenovo must be aware of a Windows Update knocking out ports. The tech did not do much troubleshooting before offering a replacement dock, almost, as if, they have to go through the motions to log this info before sending one out. 


If your dock is still under warranty, stop troubleshooting and work with Lenovo. Most likely will send out a replacement. 
Very frustrating Lenovo has stopped responding to this issue.
