Hard drive inside caddy is showing up as removable drive

2020-09-07, 23:42 PM

I just formatted my internal hard drive which is Toshiba 500 gb mk5065gsxn and swapped it to the caddy and put my newly bought Toshiba 1 tb mq04abf100 in the internal hdd slot and all was fine until today. I even migrated windows 10 and all the other partitions to the 1 tb drive and then formatted the factory 500 gb hard drive and put it into the caddy. I did everything by the book but then suddenly today the 500 gb hard drive is recognized as an external drive. My laptop is thinkpad t440p 20aw004bus and I hope there is some way to resolve this issue.

Some information must be missing here. You have two drives and they are recognized by Windows 10. The 1TB drive is the new system OS drive, and the newly formatted 500GB drive is empty. What's the problem with that?
USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works. I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

This's the problem. It's showing as external drive when it shouldn't. i tried treatasinternalport trick provided by microsoft itself. But that doesn't even stop the os from detecting the hdd in the caddy as a removable device when it shouldn't.

I'd like to add that, The caddy is in the optical bay which didn't show as external device before when there was an optical drive. But suddenly after putting a caddy and a hard drive in it, it's getting treated as external drive. Can Anyone give me a clue why this's happening? As the caddy is in the optical bay, it shouldn't be treated as an external drive right? Treatment as an internal drive drive would be appropriate isn't it?

https://prnt.sc/uevv6b Then why this's happening?

Hello Wazee,

if you put something (HDD/SSD, optical drive ... etc) in the Ultrabay Port... it will be detected as an external device simply because the Ultrabay was made as a swappable technology...

I'm not sure to really understand if you have a problem with it in terms of functionality or performance, but the windows detection as an external seemed to be normal.

good luck
