Re:High CPU Usage On ThinkPad T480

Were you planning sound when you running powertop?  It would probably be cleaner to boot into text mode (run level 3 or systemd.unit=multi-user.target) and then run powertop.  If you don't know how to do that then just reboot and run powertop without running anything else.

Issue still persists, and it appears as though the same problem is occurring (Workqueue: kacpid acpi_os_execute_deferred). I have attached a file containing the new Kernel stack trace.

Re:High CPU Usage On ThinkPad T480

The Linux Kernel is showing the system firmware version as N24ET30W (1.05

) 12/26/2017, yet all firmware is up to date:

fwupdmgr get-updates

• Thunderbolt Controller has no available firmware updates

• Samsung SSD 860 EVO 500GB has no available firmware updates

• System Firmware has the latest available firmware version

• UEFI Device Firmware has the latest available firmware version

• UEFI Device Firmware has the latest available firmware version

What is the latest stable version of the system firmware for the ThinkPad T480?

Latest is 1.34

See https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t480-type-20l5-20l6/20l5/downloads/DS502355

For me I think I had to manually select "Linux-Firmware-Updater" when I rebooted after downloading the new one using fwupdmgr for the new one to actually get installed.  You should see this option when you hit F12 to select a temporary boot device on a reboot.

The Linux-Firmware-Updater boot option doesn't work. A brief message appears on screen before the Boot menu appears again. Lenovo haven't released any system firmware updates for the ThinkPad T480, however they have made updates available for other firmware (incl the Thunderbolt Controller). System firmware remains on version 1.05. All system firmware version information reported by the Linux Kernel matches the information in the Main menu of the System firmware via ThinkPad Setup.

Based on your stack trace the version of BIOS you have is very old, there have been many fixes added for this type of thing so please update to the current version to see if that addresses this issue.  Any attempt to diagnose something that old is impractical

Completely agree on the point over the old System firmware version, however nothing can be done when Lenovo haven't provided any System firmware updates via LVFS, yet Lenovo have provided updates for other firmware via LVFS. Where are the System firmware updates? I have already done some firmware updates, and know it has been done when the boot screen showed a black Lenovo logo with a pipe character spinning clockwise, with a message at the bottom about installing system updates which is different from this screenshot.

Did you execute "fwupdmgr refresh" prior to running "fwupdmgr get-updates".  Per the Arch Wiki (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fwupd) it sounds like that should be done first.  When I performed my System Firmware upgrade to 1.34 I did it using a graphical front end to fwupdmgr.

You could always upgrade using the USB method if you are having trouble using fwupdmgr.

FYI here is the link to the System Firmware update on the LVFS site for the t480:

There is an option with fwupdmgr to manually install a firmware update, which I will try out with the System firmware version 0.1.34 update.

Unfortunately the manual install fails with the following error message:

Not compatible with firmware version 0.1.5, requires >= 0.1.16

Lenovo has pulled earlier System firmware updates for the ThinkPad T480 that would be compatible with System firmware 0.1.5 which is unacceptable!

Did you try updating using the "Bootable CD" method via USB?
