How Come I Only 65.6 GB Free Space and 156 GB Already?: Thinkpad T410

2012-08-20, 2:14 AM

I defraged my computer, removed temporary files, and deleted many files but still only have 65.6 GB Free Space. I'm careful on which websites I use, I use Google safe search and go on anti virus protection approved websites.

I checked my C drive and programs folder has 5.51 GB and Windows folder 27.9 GB. Every other folder in the C drive has much smaller size in KB.

My dad bought my Thinkpad T410 and I always assumed that having around 60 GB Free was normal since he installed programs for me. But I was a little bit sketchy that there was only 60 GB free, but assumed it was normal because of the program files my dad installed. But I realized the program files are too small to take up very much space. I had this labptop for less than two years and had to use my warranty several times for dragging arrow  (replaced keyboard) and replace fan multipe times.

"for Business"?

Anyway... Click your Start orb and type "disk cleanup" in the search box. Then select the "disk cleanup" item at the top of the search results. It'll churn for a bit and show you a window with items, checkboxes and disk use of those items. Don't tell it to delete anything at this point, just post back what it reports.

Ok.

Not too much there to get excited about.

Do you happen to know how much space is allocated to system restore points? You may have a big allocation that is full if you've been running the machine without cleanup for 2 years. I'm not in front of my pc at this moment, so I can't give the exact steps to check. Bear with me and I'll be back a bit later. In the interim, someone might jump in to continue.

If you're running Firefox, another thing to check is the amount of the cache allocation.

Cheers.

ok.

to check system restore point space allocation and usage...

- click your Start orb.

- right click Computer and select Properties.

- click System Protection near upper left of the window.

- confirm the Protection state for your C drive. Is it "On"?

- click the Configure button.

what are reported as Current Usage and Max Usage?

Cheers.

Back up your system completey (system image) using Rescue and Recovery.  Then wipe your computer and restore to this back up.  There may be some corrupted files that will be erased when the system is reimaged.

a reimage seems a bit drastic when a little housecleaning may be all that's needed... no? the OP isn't describing a broken system, but just looking for what's using disk space.

Some suggestions for tracking this down:

1. Click the Tools tab on the Property sheet for your C: drive. Run the Error-checking tool. Uncheck Automatically fix file system errors the first time you run this so you just get a report of problems, if any.

2. Check if you have ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery installed. If so check whether it's making backups on your behalf.

3. Open Windows Explorer at the root of C: drive. In the Search box type "size: >1000MB". This will find all files larger than 1,000MB (or whatever size you choose.) It may help to identify large files that you no longer need like videos, temporary files, etc. Be careful that you don't delete any system files like paging and hibernation.

4. An alternative to 3. is a utility like Sort Files List By Size And Date In Windows 7. I've never used this tool so I can't comment on how well it works.
