How to connect wirelessly to printer:

2013-09-15, 23:25 PM

My daughter has a Thinkpad T520. We have an AsusRT-N12 Wireless Router, and a Canon MX300 printer. How does she connect the Thinkpad wirelessly to the printer? TIA.

From what I searched, the Canon MX300 only has USB port to print. To print wirelessly, you need to connect to printer to a desktop using USB. Then your desktop is connected to router using ethernet. Use Windows 7's homegroup functionality on your desktop and make sure printer sharing is enabled. Then take the password generated by Desktop's windows 7 and let your T520 join the homegroup by entering the password. You should now be able to print wirelessly. The catch is that the desktop must be running and a user on the desktop has to be logged in for the wireless printing to work.

Thanks for the reply. I have Windows XP, not Windows 7,  on my desktop.

The printer is already connected to the desktop using USB and the desktop is already connected to the router using ethernet. My other daughter also has a Thinkpad, purchased last year, and she can print wirelessly with no problem.

1.Could you explain in a bit more detail how to access the "homegroup functionality"?

2. How and where is a "password generated"?

3. How and where do I "let the T520 join the homegroup by entering the password"?

TIA.

Well, I don't have XP. Homegroup is exclusive for Windows 7 and 8 which allows easy networking between computers. Here's more information about homegroup: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/homegroup-help#homegroup-start-to-finish=windows-7&v1h=win8tab1&v2h=win7tab1

I have zero experience with configuring networks with Windows XP. You can try Google Search and maybe you can find info on how to work it out.
