How would you describe the keyboard in the T25?

2019-02-15, 22:04 PM

I love the keyboard on my T25--clearly the best on any laptop I've used in recent years.

How would it properly be described though? It's not really a mechanical keyboard, is it? What type of key switch mechanism does it use?

It's called a "scissor switch" keyboard; the same technology has been used in all Thinkpads for as long as I can remember (and in many other laptops as wel).

Well, it's amazing to me that the keyboard on the ThinkPad 25 is so much better than Apple's scissor switches (which they call "Butterfly" switches). I've been using Mac laptops since 1998. I am completely tired of Apple's keyboards, and not only bought my first ThinkPad because of it, but specifically sought out the T25 for its "retro" keyboard.

So tell me this--is the only major difference between the keyboard on the T25 and the keyboards on other ThinkPad T series laptops the shape of the keys? Or is the underlying mechanism different, too?

Regardless, I really like this keyboard.

The underlying mechanism is mostly the same. It's still all scissor switches. Consider this video:

The exact shape of the switch may vary, but it can also vary between different keyboard manufacturers for the same model. Lenovo typically uses 2-3 different keyboard vendors for their keyboard.
