i7-2620m or i7-2640m are ok.  No bios change needed

What are you asking?  Is this a separate question about upgrading a W510 or are you asking about putting I7 CPU from W510 into T440?  What CPU do you have now?

Not possible at all. BIOS update doesn't change anything related to this.  It just doesn't work.

Your machine is at End of Life (EOL).  You should consider using your cash for a current model Lenovo.  I highly doubt you're going to get a true solution for a system so old.  (Built in 2012) Good luck with your endeavors!
Cheers

Replaced i5 with i7 2640 processor and all seems to work. My question is that when i go into control panel and check system and devices the processor still shows up as i5, when i run system check through lenovo site it comes up i7 2640. Does it matter that my sustem is not showing a device change, if so what steps do i take to correct.

Curious what your your readings are for the following: BIOS / [Device Manager / System Properties]

I truly believe that this system is just too old as Lenovo doesn't even make BIOS/UEFI updates for this machine any longer.  Not sure if you'll be in luck for Meltdown/Spectre patches either...   All older machines that don't get BIOS updates any longer may be susceptible to M/S vulnerabilities.  Heck, I wouldn't even buy a machine today as no OEM's (as of today) have M/S patches available.  (I know I went off topic a bit, but it's something you should really consider)

Good luck bud!
