IDEA: Laptop cooling pad with Lenovo dock connector

2020-03-26, 14:36 PM

I have thinkpad T460s (i7 6600U) at home and T460 (i5 6400U) at work. I was thinking an idea of laptop cooling pad between ultra dock and the thinkpad laptop, which has the same dock connector inled or duck, that let the powerful laptop sit little bit higher and the cooling pad will fit between the laptop and dock.

I made first prototype (only one 80 mm cooler installed using tape on the bottom) of the cooler without the Ultra dock and now the i7 6600U is not throttling anymore, Adobe Lightroom is very fast and finally computer works like it should be.

Lenovo, please put my idea in production. If you are using my idea: I'm thinkpad fan, X1 would be very nice christmas gift.

@jani-r are you able to share some images or video of your prototype?  Curious what you came up with.

Its not ready yet, just 80 mm fan hanging under the laptop and laptop is four inch (10 cm) off table, near corner. I used black tape to install it and before this the cpu cooling and thermal paste is replaced with new very thin layer. Power to the fan is from old Telewell modem 12 Volt power supply. Back of the laptop is almost 1" off the table, so air can flow under it. Cons: I cannot move the laptop, or take pictures, because this is the darkest corner of our house.
