Re: Integrated Camera displays the first frame captured, but then freezes

2019-10-22, 20:18 PM

I have the same problem with my laptop: Lenovo T470p running Win10 1903. I'm honestly disappointed right now in my purchase of a Lenovo laptop, I refuse to believe a 2yr old laptop I paid over $2k for could have a component that's already past it's useful life. I have a video conference scheduled this Friday where I'm supposed to train new team members and I can't for the life of me get this webcam working.

I'm not unfamiliar with the process of uninstall/installing/reinstalling drivers. I've already tried both un-installing the device and letting Windows detect the the hardware and its own driver as well as uninstalling the device and downloading the drvier from Lenovo PC support and executing the .EXE however nothing works: The webcam will turn on for 1 second, grab a frame then crash.

Honestly, what are the odds all of us have had our camera die on us at the same time? I don't see this being anything but a driver issue.

PS: Other things I've tried, completetly stopping my Anti-Virus, opening Lenovo Vantage to ensure the webcam isn't turned off.

Hi Rick,

It is a really annoying issue. From our userbase of about 450 Lenovo, it has only happened on 1.

Anyways, we never got it fixed, but the workaround mentioned earlier worked.

Try to create a new user on your computer, log on as this user, and see if it is working.

I worked here, so we simply wiped the userprofile, and after it re-created the user profile, it worked again.

I've got no such luck. First last night I initiated a "Reset this PC" which didn't help. After reading your post I created a new user profile (I tried first as a standard user and then as an administrator) and that didn't help.

Finally resolved. As I mentioned before, I tried several times / several different ways to re-install the driver for the integrated camera. In the end, the solution was to repeat the earlier steps (Device manager ==> uninstall device) AFTER having downgraded to Win10 1809. Once I did that, the webcam worked again.

I'm happy that it's fixed but truth is, I don't feel like upgrading to 1903 now until the training is done.

Possible SOLUTION

I had exactly the same problem. I spent a day googling and trying some reasonable "suggestions". Nothing worked except this one:

  • Press Windows key + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows Media Foundation\\Platform.
  • Right-click on the Platform folder and select New > DWORD.
  • Name it EnableFrameServerMode.
  • Right-click on the newly created value and select Modify.
  • Change its Value data to 0.
  • Do the same with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\WOW6432Node\\Microsoft\\Windows Media Foundation\\Platform key.

Hope to work for you too.

Great, for me making EnableFrameServerMode entry  in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows Media Foundation\\Platform worked.

Thanks a lot @kp1966.

This solution worked for us too, using a T470S - same issue (webcam on, off for 3 seconds, back on for 1-2 seconds, off, rinse, repeat).

I use a X1 Carbon 4th Gen (Type 20FB, 20FC) Laptop (ThinkPad) - Type 20FB, and am on Windows 1 Professional version 1903. I was facing the exact same problem and solved it by applying kp1966's instructions. Great thanks to kb1966.
