There was no flex in my t500 keyboard and I think I got it in November 08?

Re: Is T500 is good machine

Three questions for Mark_Lenovo:

1. You mention above that the Capella chipset will likely support DisplayPort Audio.  Will I be able to upgrade my T500 (model 20825XU) to the Capella chipset so that I can output digital audio (rather than needing to rely on my headset jack--I'm not kidding here folx!)  or is my 2 month old "workstation" laptop a useless POS as a driver for my office theater system?

2. Will the advanced doc (model 25031OU) PCI bay support my preferred video capture card (Matrox RT.X100 Xtreme Pro) or not?  I bought my T500 to implement a mobile DV workstation solution but so far, I'm still wondering if it's up to the job.

3. What version of the DV 1395 (FireWire) is implemented on my T500: 1394, 1394a or 1394b (the 2007 std)?  I haven't been able to find this info in any of the documentation, support, or system information provided by Lenovo.

4. How do I go about returning this machine to Lenovo if it will not work for my purposes?

thx

Duke,

There is a keyboard discussion thread in on the general discussion board that has more details, but the main thing is that Lenovo is building all new systems as possible with the T61 era keyboard - this change over was made in manufacturing in the November / December 2008 timeframe.   I say "as possible" because there could be some instances where due to language of the keyboard and available stock some exceptions could occur and I would like to avoid an instance here where someone received a system subsequently with a weight reduced keyboard and then characterized my statement as misleading.

An additional support bracket is being introduced to manufacturing, and once implemented, purchasers should be assured that all units will have a very solid feel to the keyboard.

Docmodok,

1) Capella would be introduced as a system refresh (new models), and while it is possible that a newer system board might fit existing mechanical chassis, there is no Lenovo upgrade program.  The displayport audio function is not seen as a defect to be corrected as a warranty item, but rather a new feature which may be available on future models.

2 & 3) Will require some research before answering.

4) Products purchased direct from Lenovo may be returned within 21 days as per the acquisition agreement during the purchase process.  Items being returned that are not defective, and associated with a service case, are subject to a 15% restocking fee.

You are asking some great questions, and generally these are the kinds of pre-purchase research that I would recommend customers to do before purchasing so that they ensure they are selecting a system that is right for their needs.

Mark

Building of what Mark said, one thing I wish I knew before ordering my T500 is that, due to faulty drivers, it's incompatible with dvi monitors through port replicators (http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T400_series_ThinkPads&thread.id=3704).  Of course, this is a defect that Lenovo conveniently omits from the t500 product page and the advanced mini-dock product description and compatibility page.

Hi docmodok

The documentation I have says that our FireWire implementation is 1394a. As for the advanced dock, that will take a little more looking but I should be able to get you a list of compatible cards. Stay tuned :)

T500 is a good machine, I am sure you will love it.

For hardware side, Thinkpad is much better than DELL and others.

Dont worry, just get it.

Re: Is T500 is good machine

thanks for the info Mark.

As a loyal ThinkPad user for 15 yrs, I have to say I'm VERY disappointed in my T500. for a number of reasons, not just the DP implementation.  (FingerPrint Sensor, Advanced Doc, various ports implementations, and Documentation issues still plague me...)

So I have to wonder: does Lenovo REALLY wants to piss me, and so many others, off so badly?  Given the amount of user dissention about the lack of DisplayPort Audio functionality ( http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=W_ThinkPads&thread.id=1309 ), I would certainly recommend that Lenovo commit to a Capella upgrade program for us T500 users (or perhaps a RECALL), unless of course Lenovo wishes to risk mass defection from it's highend laptop products in the future.

I'd also like to see an eSATA port and 1394b implementeds on future 'T500 workstations'.

Please DO  pass this on to the T500 product management team for me, will you, and let us know what they say.

Thanks for your assist!

Hey docmodok,

I agree that it stinks that the displayport doesn't have audio, but at least they didn't sell you displayport based speakers as a "Lenovo Recommended" accessory.

Lenovo has been doing that sort of thing with its port replicators, however.  With the current Lenovo supplied graphics drivers, any thinkpad with switchable graphics that is connected to a dvi monitor through a port replicator will exhibit a "bluescreen" error message and reboot at least once per day.  While Lenovo released updated drivers to "fix" this problem about a week or so ago, these new drivers suffer such from a litany of bugs and compatibility issues that Lenovo does not list these drivers in the driver matrix or in the System Update utility.  Therefore, any Thinkpad user suffering from the bluescreen reboot issue will have to find out about the "fix" drivers either through contact with support or through their own, independent online research.

It is also important to note that it took Lenovo a full 6 months from when it first knew about the problem to release these new, buggy, not quite ready for prime-time display drivers.  During the interim, Lenovo never mentioned on its Advanced Mini-Dock compatibility page that there was an issue with using the DVI port on switchable graphics systems, or made any effort to warn current or potential customers about the issue.

So while I do think it stinks that the DisplayPort doesn't do audio, I think the T500 and Lenovo Support suffer from much bigger problems than foolish decisions on which ports and standards to include.

Re: Is T500 is good machine

Hi Andy

Interestingly, I've had my T500 ported on the Adv Doc powering a Nec 1850LCD via the DVI port and haven't noticed the blue screen yet (thank the pc goddess for small favors!)  Then again, I undoc fairly often so perhaps I just haven't seen it happen.

My T500 arrived with driver Ver. 8.503.2.2-080818a-069536C-Lenovo for the Mob Radeon 3650.   So is this the illusive and buggy new driver you're referring to?   What's the Ver 3 for that update?

In the meantime, I will keep it doc'd for a few days and let you know if the blue screen is happening to me too.

The buggy new driver is version 8.56.  The problem is pretty well documented on this forum.  See my previous post (the one before last) for link.
