Is is true that the t460p will NOT have a GPU option or thunderbolt?!

2016-02-14, 18:35 PM

Hello, I'm in charge of ordering and procurement of personal workstations at my organization, and we had initially planned to switch from Dell latitude to lenovo thinkpad for our next hardware refresh of personal laptops, which is going to be several thousand units. We had planned to switch entirely to t460p units because myself and a number of our executives had some extremely good experiences with previous t4xxp units for our personal use. We were very impressed by the durability, power, feel and expandability of the units, something this industry has been lacking in recent years.

We had been assured that the t460p would have a dedicated GPU option, and because it was skylake and would be using the new version of USB, there would be an option to order units with thunderbolt as well.

After reviewing this http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-anounces-new-ThinkPads-T460s-T460-T560-and-T460p.157178.0.html

And the official product page: http://shop.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t460p/

It appears there will be no option for the thunderbolt OR the dedicated GPU. At least having the thunderbolt would be acceptable without the dedicated GPU, but having niether options available is going to make us unable to switch to lenovo and order ANY units for the hardware refresh. It is upsetting, but not being able to get both of those options on the t460p is a complete deal breaker.

Before we go forward and do our planned hardware refresh, does anyone know if what we are now lead to believe is true? This is a large decision we are making and need to make it soon - I'd let to get an answer from the official forum before we make our decision. Just gathering information.

T460p is planned to have discrete GPU (GF 940MX), but will be available later. Check:

http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool%5CSys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20T460p/ThinkPad_T460p_Platform_Specifications.pdf

No thunderbolt. No Ultrabay (2nd HDD/ODD). Has M.2 2242 slot that should be good for M.2 SATA 2242 SSD (but not officially supported ...)

If you want Thunderbolt, you will have to get P50.

That's really.... underwhelming...

Will any of the T models have a superior graphics option?

A large portion of these devices are going to be used for engineers requiring powerful graphics in a 14 inch form factor, hence the desire for thunderbolt.

What you are looking for (P40 with Quad-Core / non-yoga) does not exist. GeForce 940MX is the most powerful GPU available in the T-Series (T460p/T560). If you want Thunderbolt and a more powerful GPU made for engineering, you will have to choose the P50.

To my knowledge, no one manufacturer offers a true 14" Workstation as of now. T460p is the thing that comes closest to it.

In that case, it looks like I'm just going to find laptops with express card slots. Those are the only laptops that give us the graphical horsepower we need at this form factor at this point.

As an aside, is the gtx 940mx any good? I was under the impression it's a low end gaming card. How does it compare to lets say, 660m?

Alternative is consumer gaming 14'' models (MSI, Gigabyte with GTX970M GPU - only good for DX, not OpenGL), but it can open it's own can of worms if they are going to be used in business / engineering environment ...

Is it possible to confirm whether the 940MX dGPU in this laptop uses DDR3 or DDR5 memory? There's supposed to be both versions of this card available.

The t460p comes with a Geforce 940MX 2GB and it's the only gfx card available. I bought the t460p and I didn't end up buying the dGPU, because Lenovo released the t460p without the dGPU option and didn't update their website until a few days later. Too late for me.
