Re: Is there a way to swap the Fn key and left Ctrl key

2008-09-02, 4:14 AM

That Fn is the devil on Thinkpads :)  I just started a new job and they ordered me a T61p and the Fn key has been driving me crazy every time I have to use this thing outside the docking station.

I have a love/hate with this thing to be honest.  Love the performance, the springyness of the keys, the layout of the F1-F12 keys and it seems very well built.  On the other hand it's ugly as sin, the red mouse button is evil as are the matching click-buttons that go with the red button and the docking station can be very moody.

As a T500 user I am joining the users demanding BIOS swap of Fn and left Ctrl.

The Fn key has been in that location for yonks in Thinkpads, people who use Thinkpad alot are use to that. Lenovo is not going to change the location of the key just because couple of people wants it too, then more people will come complaining to Lenovo. You should have tried Thinkpad out before you buy it, learn to live with it, once you are use to it, it won't be as bad.

wjli2 - how can you be so rude and blind?! We don't want to change anything on the keyboard, we just want a BIOS switch. It will not hurt you in any way, so why are you against us? We are Lenovo customers same way as you, don't treat us as junk just because you want make everybody loving your way of typing.

WE JUST WANT BIOS SWITCH, NOTHING ELSE

I'm trying to keep calm but everytime I think of whomever was responsible for putting the Fn key where it is, I am flooded with visions of terrible, terrible things I would like to do to that person.

You are one freaky person, you might as well go and buy another brand of product and use that.

I have a new R61 and what an unpleasant surprise to find the Crtrl key displaced by a key that I don't use.  How inconsiderate.  Even though the rest of the laptop seems good, it will be the last unit I buy that has that error.  Other keyboards are switchable why not this one?

Regards,

Rod

Re: Is there a way to swap the Fn key and left Ctrl key

2009-01-27, 2:15 AM

Hello,

I too think it be wise to have an option available in the BIOS to allow the user to swap the function (Fn) and control (Ctrl) keys. I've had my Thinkpad T400 for a week now, and because I am a touch typist, I am finding it difficult to adjust to the location of the function key being in the left corner of the keyboard. This is an example of bad usability.

Although the keyboards on HP's Business Notebooks have the control key in the left corner and the function key to the right of it, they still provide an option in their BIOS to allow the user to swap the Fn and Ctrl keys around.

Ouch; the competition have got it right...
