Is upgrading SSD and RAM at the same time a good idea (T460)?

2020-09-19, 0:39 AM

I have a Nov 2016 T460 Ultrabook (Part#20FNCTO1WW).  I'm planning on upgrading the original 512GB SSD to 2TB SSD and add a 8GB RAM.  (Currently I have a single 16GB card with an extra slot, the Crucial compatible 16GB single RAM costs $141 while the 8GB one is only $37).

I was wondering if it's okay to replace both hardware parts at the same time?  It's been at least a few years since I last upgraded my other ThinkPad X220T's hard drive or RAM, so I'm feeling a little tentative and want to avoid having to open up the machine too many times.

Is there a recommended order to do this?  I'm guessing that if I upgrade the RAM first, it might help the cloning go faster, correct?  Is it also safer to replace one item at a time, in case anything goes wrong it'll be easier to isolate and diagnose potential causes?

Thanks!

Your existing RAM is plenty to clone a disk.  I would open it once and change both parts at the same time
