Issues with Sound on Lenovo T490

2020-06-04, 23:30 PM

Hello.

After attempting an update through the Lenovo Vantage app my T490 began having issues with sound. After that install failed my computer showed that there were no speakers installed.

I attempted to follow the options from the troubleshooter, which had me reboot my machine to finish installing drivers. No change.

Looking in my device manager I'm able to see my sound devices with no error. (See image)

I then went looking under "System devices" and I find a "Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) OED" that is unable to start. Its showing Code 10 (This device cannot start). I attached a screenshot of this as well.

I found some other articles that mentioned a similar issue in the past with other devices. To resolve this I would uninstall the "Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) Audio Controller

"

Upon doing so sound is restored. But within 30 seconds the Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) Audio Controller is re-installed and I lose sound again.

It seems as though I'm getting the wrong audio driver and not able to use the sound card.

Does any one know what could be going on here? Or things to look at?

what OS version?

please try below steps:

  1. Right-click the Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) Audio Controller (Note: not Intel SST OED) and select Update driver
  2. Select Browse my computer for driver software
  3. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
  4. Select High Definition Audio Controller , and then select the Next button.
  5. Reboot the system when the driver is installed.

thanks.

FYI - These steps worked for me immediately.  Rebooted and so far it is working.

Issue was with Lenovo ThinkPad T590.  Audio not working even after Win10 re-install, updates, and Lenovo Vantage updates etc.  Device Manger showed "Sound, video, and game controllers" with no issues listed. But under "System devices" there were two items listed.

1, Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) Audio Controller

2, Interl(R) Smart Sound Technolgy (Intel(R) SST) OED

The second item had the yellow warning flag in its icon.  Steps above say to update the first item I listed (the one without the warning flag).  This resolved my issues even after reboot - still early days.  And both items 1 and 2 no longer appear under System Devices.  Checked Win updates and Lenovo Vantage updates to see if it would replace any drivers but nothing.

Hi,

I've just did that and sound is working, but Speakers and Mic are not showing as Realtek as they used to - now they show High Definition Audio.

Also Realtek Audio Console is not working - it was working before and the only way to get it to work (and it used to work before) is to reinstall Realtek Drivers and end up with no audio.

For sure there must be a good solution to this - not just this work around that messes up with some software that was working before.

Regards,

JC

Dear,

Could you please share your Machine MTM and OS version?

I would also like to know why the issue can still be reproduced.

Thanks,

Sam.

Same with my brandnew T14AMD, and on many other machines. Even the Realtek drivers which are provided via Lenovo Vantage / Update do not work.

I wonder when will Lenovo will fix this, as it is known for weeks, if not months by now.

I can consistently reproduce the issue. I stopped using the workaround because the High Definition Audio Controller would fail coming out of sleep. To reproduce I can plug in a midi controller, only see a few sub devices show up in device manager, uninstall the "Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) Audio Controller", unplug my midi controller, plug in my midi controller, and have all sub devices show up. This is consistent across all 4 of my midi controllers, and also occasionally conflicts with other audio hardware (vr headset, usb headphones, etc). This is unfortunate as it means I must manually swap to the generic Microsoft "High Definition Audio Controller" every time I need to use both a midi controller and my built in audio, then undo it. I also tried the drivers from Intel, but they performed similarly.
