Re: Just Received My New T431S - Screen is Abysmal

@Jakoob,

From the product website,

ASUS ZENBOOK™ UX42VS Screen: 200 nits 14” 16:9 HD (1366x768)

I'm not impressed and I'll bet these are THE SAME HD (not HD+) screens that T430s buyers rejected in droves. That is the only screen they offer for a 14" Zenbook, so you must be thinking of a 13" model (which do indeed have better specs).

There are only a few models of 14" screen in the whole world available to OEMs like Lenovo, ASUS, etc. They all appear to be aimed at corporate (not personal) buyers looking for non-exciting productivity use.

Once again (with feeling!)... The bright, high quality displays are ALL 13- and 15-inches now. That is what the industry has settled on. That is why Apple has no 14" model.

People wanting a lightweight Lenovo laptop with a great screen should look to Lenovo's 13" models.

@Burz

Yes, I was talking about the 13" model from Asus. Truth is, the isn't many good 14" panels out there, but few of them can be found:

HP Envy 14 Spectre                                 -> 221.2 cd/m² / 413:1 / 1600x900

Alienware M14x R2                                  -> 266.4 cd/m² / 623:1 / 1600x900

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon                -> 281.8 cd/m² / 681:1 / 1600x900

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon touch     -> 277.4 cd/m² / 885:1 / 1600x900

T431s                                                        -> 265.4 cd/m² / 362:1 / 1600x900

Strange is that even Lenovo itself knows, how to do reasonably good 14" screen (X1 Carbon), yet I'm not sure, that buying T431s in simillar price level as X1 Carbon will change the screen to the one, that X1 Carbon has.

Anyway I hope for next generation of Thinkpads (T440, T540...) to have some good displays in general, so we can fully enjoy our undestroyable laptops :)

If all the good screen's are 13" and 15", then where is lenovo's T330?

My T410 is now 3 years old and unless the PC industry does something exciting, my next computer could be a 13" retina MBP (which is much cheaper than my T410 cost).

I always thought the T series was meant to be the best, with the T**p models being the best of the best.

Lenovo has the L and the EDGE series to give us rubbish quality, when I buy a T series I expect something that can compete with the retina MBP (I buy for personal use).

After having had a few thinkpads personally (and DELL at work), and using an 11" MBA on the side, I can say the corporate aimed thinkpads just don't cut it and are not for me. Build quality issues, fan issues, terrible displays, and 100 cycle to 80% batteries when other fruit companies are using 1000 cycle to 80% batteries.

The only saving grace for my T410 is that I was able to upgrade the HDD and RAM myself, and the excellent warranty coverage that replaced both the CPU fan and keyboard. The repairability of the thinkpad with local support wins.

This thread has persuaded me to not look at the T431 as there are better alternatives out there. Hopefully we will see a T340p in the future.

It's called the X230. It has a nice screen and full power processor. There is a touch version, too. I almost got that one instead of the T430s.

Sharp have new 14" IGZO displays, maybe we can see them in T series thinkpads in the future.

Or do we miss out again because of lack of a second supplier to reduce supply chain risk?

Note there is currently a notebook with 14.1" matte 1920x1080 IPS screen on the market, so yes, it is possible.

Re: Just Received My New T431S - Screen is Abysmal

2013-06-27, 2:34 AM

Well if this thread is any indication of truth for the display, this is going to be incredibly frustrating for me.  I just bought the laptop and watched a few video reviews and nobody really complained too much about the display.  They mentioned the viewing angles weren't great, but the word "abysmal" or any synonym thereof were absent.

Unfortunately this thread is full of valid complaints, but seemingly only one person who actually owns the device.  It would be great to get more owners to comment.  I will be one of these owners tomorrow.

Anyone comparing a Macbook Retina display should re-evaluate their expectations.  First off the T431s display is anti-glare, not glossy; the contrast *will* suffer.  Another major issue with comparing the Retina display is that you're locked to either OS X or Windows, unless you like incredibly awful xrandr scaling.  I'll stick with standard resolutions until ultra-high resolution scaling is implemented in Linux.  The Retina display also has a huge host of issues around the LG panels causing serious ghosting of which I have experienced.  It's absolutely terrible and if any display is warranted the title "abysmal" that's it.  Anyways, comparing the T431s to a Retina seems foolish as it has nearly as many cons as it has pros.

I am not at all being an apologist here, especially since I find it ridiculous that an IPS or higher quality TN is not available as an option.  If the screen is as everyone says here, unusable viewing angles and terrible brightness I will hold you to that standard when testing and reporting back tomorrow.  My hope is that everyone is just being overly-dramatic and that the display will be completely usable for programming and web browsing needs.

My biggest fear is that calibration is completely wrong and that I will not have an acceptable white balance.

The TL;DR is that I think we need more people who actually own the device to comment.  I'm giving them benefit of the doubt until I see for myself.  You'll be able to trust my unbiased word tomorrow after I review.  Shouldn't take long if the display is as bad as everyone says it is.

Re: Just Received My New T431S - Screen is Abysmal

Hi tbranyen,

Of course me comparing it to a Retina display is foolish, and I couldn't agree more.  I was lucky and had two Retina displays, one with LG and the other with Samsung.  Neither suffered from the ghosting issues and I was fully aware of the image retention issue.  The one thing I do not like about the Retina is the glossy display, I absolutely despise it.  My point was that there are laptops on the market with these beautiful screens, so why are Lenovo not offering them as an option?

As far as my T431s went, yes I did try to calibrate it.  I spent a couple hours between Ubuntu and Windows 7 and 8 and simply could not get the screen to a usable point.  My only conclusion was that Lenovo simply chose a low quality panel.  It really is a shame, because the T431s is almost perfect from a design point.  However, when I am on a trans-pacific or trans-Atlantic flight there was just no way that screen was going to cut it.  Let alone a few hours in a hotel or library when I am not connected to my desktop NEC monitor, I just couldn't bring myself to even trying to use it...  it was that bad.

I have a X1 Carbon, as while that display is much better than the T431s, that isn't saying much.  However, the X1 Carbon has much better viewing angles in both direction.  I just want an IPS panel, that is all.

I totally agree with the complaints concerning the low quality screen. I have a t431s and I can't believe lenovo had the balls to use such an awful panel. That's just dishonest.

Hope I'll be able to replace the panel by myself if I find one with acceptable quality which fits T431s screen dimensions and connectivity
