Re: Just Received My New T431S - Screen is Abysmal

I'm not sure the IPS option available for thinkpads x220 is only for "gamers".

TN panels are traditionally gaming panels (due to the better refresh rates).

IPS panels are a more professional panel, delivering accurate colours.

Let's not confuse this with a comparisson of glossy vs matte which has nothing to do with the panel technology. An anti-glare coated glossy display is just as good as a matte display.

IPS refresh rates have caught up to TN panels, but TN panels have not caught up to IPS/S-PVA in terms of viewing angles and colour reproduction. TN panels don't belong on premium products.

Mark,

"We don't know if his particular unit is indicative of all T431s systems,  nor how this compares to the prior T430s or other competitive models. " Yes we do. Read the reviews. This precise issue is flagged in laptopmag's review. The dimmer screen vs. t430s is a scientific fact, not "speculation".

if a laptop is "done down" that is the risk you run with having forums. You can't censor out negative feedback. You don't get to decide what is a "constructive outcome". A constructive outcome for me is to not buy a laptop with a terrible screen. There is no such thing as "fair feedback". Feedback is feedback. Listening will be more fruitful for you than trying to control the debate.

Either allow free comment (moderated for abuse of course) or have no forums at all. Censored - therefore biased in your favour - feedback threads are worse than no feedback at all.

Sorry to resurrect an older thread, but I'm hoping someone whose used the T431s can provide some clarification about the display quality. When people describe the display as "dismal," are they comparing it to what we've come to expect from Thinkpads in the past few years, or are they comparing it to what we've come to expect in the smartphone/tablet era (that is, super high-res IPS displays like what you'd find on a Retina Macbook or a Zenbook Prime)?

Stated differently, is this display roughly equivalent to the HD+ displays on the T420 and T430? I just ordered a T431s, and if that's what I can expect, then all is well. But if the display is significantly worse than recent 14 inch Thinkpads, I may want to cancel my order.

Hi facelessghost,

I don't have live experience with those ThinkPad displays, but I was testing PC screens for a while and if you are not limited by money I would definitely go for T440s with AHVA (incorrectly named IPS), which is way better than TN screen.

Check the color quality of T440s on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eXZCo9OJCM

Just to achieve such colors and viewing angles on TN panel (eg T431s) is not possible, because it is limited by the technology it self.

Here you have T420 s T440s (TN vs AHVA) and you can see for yourself, how different color range can be achieved

Thanks, Jakoob.

Here's a follow up. Would it be possible to later put a t440 display on a t431s?

This has to be confirmed by some more acknowledged person, but I would say, that no. Different type of screen may need different number of pins and also different invertor. I wouldn't risk it.

Re: Just Received My New T431S - Screen is Abysmal

I received my t431s last week so I thought I'd share my thoughts on thes display here. "Abysmal" is not a fari description. Yes, there are better displays out there, but there are a lot more worse displays out there, too.

The brightness is good, contrast is decent, and blacks look nice and black. The look great to me, but graphics professionals will surely diagree. As always, 1600x900 on a 14-inch display looks nice and crisp and strikes a nice balance between real estate and readability. It is true that the viewing angles are limited, especially compared to an IPS display, but not limited enough to cause any problems for a single viewer.

I agree that this computer deserves something better, and I don't understand why it didn't ship with the same display as the x1 carbon (or why that display wasn't at least available as an option). But my subjective opinion is that this is a very nice display, and one that I'm quite happy with. Unless you're comparing this to a retina Macbook or a Zenbook Prime or an XPS 13 or anything along those lines, I don't think you'll find much to complain about.

Bought a t431s recently. Screen is bad. Typical trash TN. Good news is I was able to upgrade it to a ips. Google T431s T440s ips for more info.

I commented early on in this thread about the quality not being that bad.  I still contend the monitor is fine for coding and YouTube, but I've realized for graphics and hd movies, it's just garbage.

I took @dreamwonder's advice and bought a replacement T440s screen and will be replacing it.  It's so cheap to buy and install that it's kinda pathetic Lenovo wouldn't offer this upgrade themselves.

Oh well, carrying on with the T431s.
