Just got a T510 Thinkpad for my daughter:

2010-08-26, 0:14 AM

Entering high school, was going to get a Sony, a friend with a computer repair business urged me to go with the Lenovo.

So far so good!

One question (and I'm sure we will have many): the laptop did not come with any type of user instruction manual. Is there one? Can it be ordered from somewhere? If not, is there a site where some type of user manual can be downloaded? Just something that identifies the use of each key, and maybe lists and explains some of the various functions. TIA

there is no manual as such.

But i guess i can help you with the explanation.

Fn + space bar = magnification of screen

Fn + F2 = locking the computer with password if you have the windows password set

Fn + F3 = change in power state (a short cut to the Thinkvantage Power Manager Power State options)

Fn + F4 = sleep

Fn + F5 = allows you to toggle all wireless connection on and off

Fn + F6 = VOIP mic and camera option selection menu

Fn + F7 = change screen mode setup (i.e. clone mode, extended display mode, projector mode)

Fn + F8 = Ultranav selection (basically allows you selective shutdown your trackpad or trackpoint or enable both, you can do this from bios menu too).

Fn + F12 = Hibernate

Fn + home = increase brightness (Fn + End is the decrease)

Fn + PgUp = thinklight

Your multimedia control (i.e. play and stop) is your Fn + up, down, left, right

Thanks much for your quick reply.

I followed the link. Most of the info is the technical specs, troubleshooting, etc;  certainly helpful for any future problems, but I was looking for something way more basic, sort of an instruction manual that explained all the features of the machine and how to access & use them.

The setup poster is useful, at least it identifies the function of the keys!

My computer guy just smiled when I expressed my surprise about no manual. He said that most people who buy one have had one before or are "computer literate" enough to figure them out for themselves. That leaves me out on both counts!

Hi oldberkeley,

Yes you are right. the Setup Poster is useful for new user to understand the components around the laptop such as wifi switch, usb port, cable port, etc.

If you explore further in the page as explained by IPnaSH, you will see that are a few more useful documents for your reference too. For instance, if you want to know more about Fn keys, you can download the Hardware Maintenance Manual document. Besides Fn keys explanation, there are many other useful info in this document as well such as indicators status which is useful for new user too.

Hope your daughter will be happy with your gift for her. ;)

Cheers,

Cleo
