Keyboard randomly triggering keys

Hi,

I've recently had an issue with my T470 keyboard. When I'm using it random behaviour starts happening at various intervals. It seems like some of the keys are triggering when they are not pressed. There's no issue with keys being physically stuck, but for example when I'm typing a document it randomly pastes something in. So I've narrowed it down to some keys in the lower left of the keyboard are being triggered.

So when I press "v", it actually triggers "ctrl+v", and sometimes when I open a browser in the address line a series of zzzzzzs automatically come up without me having pressed anything. It doesn't happen consistently, but I'd love to know has anyone any ideas how to fix this. Is it a driver issue or a hardware one?

At the moment the only way I can use my laptop is with an external keyboard, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Neal

Re:Keyboard randomly triggering keys

Hi NealG,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

This might be caused by bad drivers of even a static buildup in the device. These tend to be quite localized and can cause havoc on some columns/rows of keys, but it's not uncommon. Please try the troubleshooting below to try and remedy the issue:

Step 1. PMU - Static Discharge
- Remove all cables attached to the device (ac adapter, power, hdmi, external mouse/keyboard, etc)
- Ensure device is switched OFF
- Hold down power button for 60 seconds
- Re-attach all cables
- Connect the AC Adapter, then let the device charge for about 2 minutes (if it does) then start up as usual.

Step 2. Uninstall Keyboard Device + Drivers.
- Press the Windows key+X , select "Device Manager"
- Under "Keyboards"  - Select the device in question, right click and select "Uninstall Device" There might be more then one device listed.
- If prompted to uninstall drivers associated with the device, tick the box and continue.
- Perform a restart of the computer to have Windows install the most generic drivers for this device.

- In the event this does not bring it back, go to the device manager again,
- Right click the keyboard device and select update driver.
- Select "Browse for drivers on your computer"
- Select "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"
- Select the latest keyboard related driver from the list and click "Next"

Step 3. System Board Updates

I'd suggest trying to download and install the newest Chipset / Serial I.O and Management Engine Interface drivers from the Lenovo Support Page.
Just plot in the serial number for your device and hit enter, might have to hit it twice. Then head to Drivers & Software then Chipset Section.

Re:Keyboard randomly triggering keys

Hi Voithos,

That first solution about the static discharge seems to have resolved the issue.

Thanks so much for your help.
