Lenovo T420s "No battery is detected"

2017-02-05, 6:35 AM
Hi, I installed a new battery in my Lenovo T420s. I have Windows 10 operating system. On the taskbar, I see "No battery is detected" message. I tried another battery and had the same result. I have tried searching other threads and tried those steps including deleting the battery drivers, lenovo power manager etc, all to no benefit... Does someone know how to fix this issue for good? thanks.

Try this: take battery out, go in windows device manger, UNinstall the current battery, shut-down laptop, wait 5 minutes, put new battery in and start... your new battery will be recognised then.

  • shut it down
  • remove battery
  • boot Windows with AC adapter connected
  • uninstall the battery from the device manager
  • shut it down
  • put battery back in (fully charged), remove AC adapter, this is most important step!!!
  • boot Windows
  • battery should be detected again

2 bad batteries are unlikely but possible, especially if they are aftermarket (non-lenovo).  It is also possible your charging circuitry on the motherboard has died.

Also, if your laptop battery died because of old age, I would suggest you update the BIOS and if you have genuine lenovo battery then check the battery firmware and use their program to see if the battery is recalled!

This does not work with my W540 and my new W540 battery. It does not like the new battery, even though it is compatible to W540.

@BromleyN Hi, a quick thought, put the new battery in and drain it completely, wait 10 minutes, put it back on and go straight in BIOS to drain the new battery complete empty, i sound harsh ,but it will survive ;-) I have recovered many batteries that way. Get a coffee and if laptop is dead take the new battery out, plug the power cable in and remove the current battery in the windows drives, see steps before, it's very crucial with Windows to shut it down and wait 5 minutes. then put new battery in and power up with power plug in. it should detect now. Let me know how it goes...

Hi - I tried this but did not work.  But I finally figured out the problem.

In the W540, the battery connector does not exactly match the laptop connector.  When putting a battery in the laptop, it is possible that the two connectors do not align, but you can still push it in and it clicks in place.  This bends the laptop pins.

So the connector had not connected.  Some of the pins on the laptop (the male side) were bent and made no contact.

I then checked my batteries, and one of them even had the connector pushed in and out of position.  It would still not connect with straight pins.

So check the connector on laptop and battery first thing when it says battery not detected.
