Lenovo T450S No Sound At All

2016-01-19, 22:27 PM

I have a Lenovo T450S.  It came with Windows 7 installed, but I did a fresh install of Windows 8.1.  Everything seems to be working fine, except I have no sound at all.  Nothing from the speakers, and nothing if I plug headphones into the jack.  This is the list of things I've tried up to this point.

- Uninstalling from Device Manager and letting Windows reinstall

- Download drivers to reinstall manually

- Attempted to set default audio device in Control Panel (Says no devices installed, even when showing disabled devices)

- Windows Updates (100% up to date)

- Scan/Updates through Lenovo Solution Center

- Update BIOS

- Update Chipset

Realtek HD Audio Manager doesn't show up in the Control Panel at all.  The Lenovo Solutions Center shows that the HD Audio Controller is disabled, but going into the Device Manager shows that it's enabled, but has this error message:

"A driver (service) for this device has been disabled.  An alternate driver may be providing functionality. (Code 32)"

I'm at a loss at this point as to what to try next.  Taking any and all suggestions.  Thanks.

Make/Model - Lenovo T450S

OS - Windows 8.1

Product Name - 20BX001AUS

Welcome Lloyd1234

1. Could you access the BIOS (Press F1 when the laptop is booted up - POST), and check if the HD Audio is enabled?

2. If it is enabled, reload optimized default and restart. (Remember to change boot to UEFI if you have changed to it before fresh installing of Windows 8.1)

3. Where do you download the driver? From Lenovo Support or Realtek Support Web?

I went through the BIOS option by option, and I couldn't find anything labeled "HD Audio", or even anything to do with "Audio".  I think I went through every available setting, but if you could point me to where in the BIOS that setting would be, I'll go there and check it out.

I downloaded the driver from both locations, the Lenovo support site along with Realtek's website.

Hi Lloyd1234

If that's the case, you would have to contact Tech Support, the problem could be the system board.

Peter - Can you point me to the right location in the BIOS where I would find the audio setting? I want to make sure I was actually looking in the right spot before taking this farther.

You say it came with Win 7, odd at this date. But did it work with that build?

Why didn't you do the upgrade to Win 10 instead. A clean install needs are the Lenove files/drivers if not generic and available from MS driver library. If it was working I would say you have software issue somewhere. A upgrade would not have cause this but because the clean install you'd need the full array of drivers from Lenovo.

I would have thought the notebook would have had an OEM Win 8,1 OS build in it. Doesn't make sense unless it was used and downgraded.

Yes, it came with Windows 7, with a free 8.1 upgrade.  I didn't do the Windows 10 upgrade due to some of the software I use not being compatible/tested on Windows 10.  When I got the machine, the very first thing I did was a clean install, so to be honest, I couldn't tell you if it worked originally.  I never thought to check the sound right out of the gate before doing the clean install.

You should call Tech support and they should be able to guide you to install all the necessary files. If need it can be escallated to someone skilled and remote access your system to work on it for you.

I called Support.  I was on the phone for about 90 minutes.  I talked to their first tier support, as well as both software and hardware.  Software thinks it's a hardware problem.  Hardware was no help at all.  They wanted me to send the laptop back to replace the speakers.  The only questions they asked were, did I uninstall and reinstall the drivers, and was the sound muted.

However, I did pick up another piece of info with this.  Not only is the sound not working, the microphone isn't working either.  With that extra piece of info, does anyone else have any ideas?

All, just a heads up, I have resolved the issue.  After much searching around, I found that "Start" entry for the registry key "hdaudbus" was set to "4", which is disabled.  I'm not sure how it got that way, but that's what it was.  I changed it to "3", and made sure that "hdaudaddservice" was also set to "3".  I rebooted the machine, and voila, both the sound and microphone are working again.

Registry Key Locations (Change "Start" entry to "3")

hkey_local_machine\system\controlset001\services\hdaudbus
hkey_local_machine\system\controlset001\services\hdaudaddservice

P.S. - As a side note, it is recommended to backup your registry before making any sort of changes.
